Finn has been a top class half back at this level for quite a few years not just at Fev but at Dewsbury before that.

 

For whatever reason he has never had a shot in a SL team. With that in mind, it's great that he will be able to test himself against the world's best playing for Ireland in the WC. It will be interesting to see how he goes.

 

The same goes for Yere and Toggae ( spelling) from Sheffield. I look forward to seeing all these lower league stars test themselves at the highest level in the WC.

 

I see Calvert has 16 tries for Whitehaven. He seems to have been scoring tries in bunches for about 8 years. Does anyone know his career totals. ? Going on the number of tries scored and knowing that he is very fast, i am surprised that he too has never been offered a chance at SL.

His type of player gets better with age. He played at Fev in 2005 when they were relegated to the 3rd tier, and he wasn't bad, but nowhere near the creator he is today. Everyone says he's slow but he always seems to be the one tracking back to save the day when the opposition makes a break. I think it's because his rugby brain reacts that split second faster than the rest, and while he still has the speed of thought he can go on playing at the top of The Championship well into his thirties.

That's so true. Brian Jefferson played for Keighley, Yorkshire and England at RL and was a great player but slow, very slow but his rugby brain, quickness of thought and anticipation made him a very very good player. I hope Finn does Championship rugby proud in the green shirt this November.

Finn does lack pace but he is very strong, which isn't often mentioned. Time and again over recent seasons we have seen him score tries carrying two or three men over the line with him, not something you see from many scrum halves. And he's strong in defence, too; Leigh appeared to have a clear policy of running at him in the first half of the recent play-off game but didn't get much change out of him, whereas three of Rovers' tries came through Greg Worthington running round or through Finn's opposite number Ryan Brierley. He reads the game very well, is an excellent goal kicker and his tactical kicking lately has been very good too.
