Well, every single club had an A team and there were no restrictions on who could play for them. In addition there were highly competitive and relatively prestigious leagues to be won. There was also a retain and transfer system, which is often overlooked.

This has been introduced due to the requests from Championship clubs for a cap - it hasn't been imposed from on high.

And they also avoid the significant costs of owning their own ground. I'm sure that KN would be happy to tell you how owning your own ground nowadays is a double-edged sword, unless you are generating significant secondary income from it.
