Bennett unfair to SL Clubs, Players?......or a welcome wind of change for Internationals?

Recommended Posts

I don't know why its not listed as a Test in RLProject, it must be an oversight. well picked up Scubby.

Bennett may have a better chance than Nigel Wood for sure.

Will he have any influence on the self interested NRL Coaches and their seasons preparation?.... I am not sure about that.

IIRC Gareth Widdop was also released by Melbourne Storm for that same test match in June 2010

OK  so some clubs have released 1 player for 1 game. That is not what Bennett is asking for. He wants the players for some weeks at the same time as pre season which ispossibly the most important time of year for club coaches. I say again he has no chance

They also don't have and on the 2016 internationals listed, other than 3 involving Pacific teams

I suspect that having players at the very end of the season, and then at the start of the next one before they have completed their pre-season is not the optimal solution. It will be one that Bennett has suggested because he is based in Oz and has club commitments. Similar to his Dubai suggestion - it is about circumstances rather than being the best solution for the game.

Let's go for the right solution rather than fudging things to make it fit in. Personally that would have involved Bennett being an assistant to a full time coach in the lead up to the World Cup rather than Bennett who hasn't been impressive so far with his media presence, demands to clubs or his apparent approaches to NRL players.

For me, the last paragraph is spot on. WBs track record and prescence is second to none. It would have been no good for him to support McNamara, as Steve's his own man, but another Coach, in contract until after the WC, makes more sense. Maybe Wayne wanted it that way in his interview, but surely his plan, going forward, of how he saw recruitment, fitness structure, International competition leading up to the WC and subsequent support & planning would have been a key points?

The problem still remains in how to introduce more International games into a SL hell bent on quantity rather than quality.

But the key point is that Bennett is the coach not an assistant coach so we have to develop a solution that fits in with his other commitments. Otherwise its a waste of time him being in charge.

What if his commitments mean he wants the players all winter?

Bennett is clearly an excellent manager, that does not mean that he should just get everything he wants, if we can't get a programme that works (he and the RFL knew that he had commitments in Oz) then yes, it is a waste of time him being in charge, but that is not Cunningham's problem. He shouldn't just bend over and have his whole pre-season disrupted because the RFL and Bennett have made this decision.

I am as big a fan of international RL as anyone, but I still don't get that having the players for Oct/Nov and then having them again in Jan, before they have played anymore or done their club pre-season is a good move.

If we can get a mid-season game, he could have them for a week then, maybe a few days afterwards too, that gives almost a fortnight, plus they should have meetings/video sessions/conditioning once or twice a month to create as much of an England team as they can, but do you honestly believe the proposal for Oct/Nov and then Jan is anything but bizarre?

I think Clubs are obliged to release players for Test matches.

Not sure if they have any obligation to release players for pre season training camps or get togethers though.

Talent is secondary to whether players are confident.

Bennett didn't release Milford.

Quite easy for an influential coach to influence a player that it in their best interests not to play.

That says  it all about Bennett

Spot on.

I have never forgotten how he treated Justin Hodges and then paraded Anthony Mundine while he was contracted to St George.

Two sets of rules me thinks.

Talent is secondary to whether players are confident.

From the Coaches perspective, the players do not have enough rest time. Getting to finals and Intrrnational duty, limits that even more, so, from a purely 'coach selfish' point of view WBs requests are an issue.

From WBs perspective, he has to choose (not enough players in NRL) from a UK pool who are playing too many games, no gaps in season, probably no current player central testing info and have no International programme arranged for him to 'run the rule' over the squad. To an extent, his hands are tied.

From the RFL perspective and not knowing what the arrangement is with WB, they have appointed one of the worlds top Coaches, with historical testing info, without an Int programme, with a crammed SL & CC fixture list, without agreed flexible arrangements with Clubs (IMO).

Personally think he should have met with as many SL coaches on his last visit. Getting them onside is critical and the only link he seems to have is Denis.

Personally, I think the RFL have appointed him and then sat on their hands. Over to you Wayne. No good.
