Apart from take the game out to all those places, including australia.

Yep nothing of substance.

121 years old today.

Happy Birthday.

If those founders could see how we have done not much with this game they would turn in their graves

The fact the Aussies have run with it gives no credit to where we are with the game.

We have brought several teams into our competition only to see them all die bar Catalans.

Walked away from London and Wales,,

We have failed on pretty well everything we have done.

Talent is secondary to whether players are confident.

Simply put; money.

An old rivalry that had somewhat waned has been revived as a marketers dream.  Selection criteria that forces Pacific Islanders, for example, to choose possible Origin and Australia, and definitely having to forgo their country of birth, while they wait to see if they are selected.  Only when it is clear that they will not be selected do they become free to choose once more.

It’s an advertising monolith now so big that promotion of the Kangaroos as the ultimate is a threat not just to the games as a series, but more to the profits generated from it.  It keeps players away from playing internationals.  It keeps the public’s attention within Australia rather that looking outward.  It promotes insular thinking.

Whilst not disregarding SOO as a contest, Rugby League as a sport needs to survive through international competition, and while the Blues and Maroons remain in the ascendancy compared to the Green & Gold, Rugby League as a whole suffers.

Islanders can not simply choose to play SOO, most are born in Australia or have moved there as young kids.

Not saying there isn't more to it, but don't kid yourself that the islanders aren't being developed to help the Tongan or Fijian international calendars, they're there to find the next batch of Origin stars. Hence the requirements.

Australia itself just doesn't produce in numbers what Origin demands now as a spectacle, and international competition does indeed suffer because of it.
