Why should Swinton play for a draw when a win means they are as good as safe.

Precisely, its in neither teams interest to draw, a win for either would almost guarantee them safety.. But it is nonsense when relegation could be determined by games being played where one team has nothing on the line.

It happens in football from time to time but I can't recall it ever happening in rugby league.

Its happened before, i think Featherstone was one of the teams, both needed a draw 12-0 at half time 12 all full time nearly backed it thats how i remember it.
