Using the IPL Model would firstly require the RFL to sell 8 x 10 year franchises at auction with the winning bids having to pay 10% of the auction price by each preseason deadline. How much, in total could the RFL raise at such an auction? I chose nine so that each team has 4 home and away matches. The home games could be played at football stadia in the designated area of the team. If there was a team in Anglia for example, four games perhaps two at Carrow Rd, one at Portman Rd, and one at London Rd Peterborough. Not only spread it around the country but also within each area. The organization running the tournament would give a nominal price for the players for auction, a set spend limit per team. The contracts would be independent of SL or NRL. 9 teams, 20 players per squad, 180 players in all. It means of course that players not chosen would end their season at SL end, end of August. So it runs for 9 weeks? Are there playoffs after? 20 players isn't enough to cover injury, illness, compassionate leave and suspensions even for 9 weeks. The organisation behind a proposal such as yours would have to be the RFL, as the BCCI is the organisation behind the IPL, the whole purpose of such a League would be to provide funding for the governing body through the franchise auction in order for the governing body to invest in the international team and grassroots / community game. Odsal Outlaw
New ideas are always good to consider ... RL needs to continue to innovate. So I’ll chuck one in ... - 3wk 9s circuit - wk 1 Headingley, wk2 France, wk3 Saints (1 Yorkshire, 1 west of the pennies and 1 in dev area) - regional / national teams such as NW, NE, Yorkshire, South, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, France, Euro Qualifier - played mid season so England can go to Southern Hemisphere for an international Benefits Allows England to play quality opposition in a 3wk window so reduce rushed travel. Gives Euro nations guaranteed exposure and development over 3wks and also helps them develop for world 9s. Regional English teams puts a different slant on competition and should reduce impact on SL clubs as not all their players will be involved. Oliver Clothesoff
I’ve got a barking mad idea, it’s called marketing and advertising Rugby League to death, play games at more convenient times (so, not Friday’s where people have to battle the M62 after work) and clubs do more to make each game an event rather than it just being about 80 minutes of Rugby. It’ll never catch on.
