YORK Knights boss Mark Applegarth is glad to be able to call on co-captain Jesse Dee again ahead of Saturday’s trip to Toulouse Olympique.
The popular Australian utility has not featured since May’s defeat to Castleford Tigers, having been stood down for the mandatory eight weeks after suffering two head knocks in quick succession.
Dee, who has also not been able to participate in contact training during that time, has been a notable absentee, as has fellow second row/centre Sam Wood, who has missed the wins over Huddersfield Giants and Hull FC due to suspension.
“It’s massive,” Applegarth said of Dee’s return. “Jesse obviously is a big leader for us.
“He’s a great player and a big personality behind the scenes.
“He’s been out now for eight games, he’s been missed, not only for the things that you see on the field, but how he conducts himself in training every day, the things he brings there and the leadership.
“I think we’ve got Jesse and Woody both back in contention, so it’s pleasing to see a couple of players of that calibre back available.”
Veteran winger Ben Jones-Bishop is also closing in on a return after breaking his foot against Wakefield Trinity in March.
The 37-year-old has been progressing well in his recovery, but is not expected to be available until August.
“Bish won’t be this week,” Applegarth confirmed.
“He’s rehabbing really well, but naturally, he’s still got some boxes that he’s got to tick.
“I don’t think he’s too far off, if I’m honest. Without rubbing a crystal ball, you’d probably say two to three weeks, tops.”
