Sam Burgess outlines Warrington Wolves recruitment plans after prop’s exit

WARRINGTON WOLVES might have parted company with experienced prop Zane Musgrove amid mounting injury worries.

But they won’t be rushed into finding new blood as the countdown to the Challenge Cup final continues against a background of faltering Super League form.

Former NRL and Samoa player Musgrove has joined Championship club Oldham after what is believed to be an internal disciplinary issue at Warrington.

And that leaves coach Sam Burgess even lighter in the forwards as he deals with the long-term absence of hooker Danny Walker (knee) while waiting to see how soon prop Paul Vaughan will get over an ongoing calf problem and versatile Jordy Crowther an ankle issue which he sustained during Friday’s 31-12 home defeat by Hull KR.

Oli Leyland picked up a knee injury while fellow halfback March Sneyd, like hooker Sam Powell, was kept out of the match as a precaution.

Winger Matty Ashton will miss the remainder of the season due to a knee injury, while halfback and captain George Williams faces a race against time to make the Challenge Cup showdown with Hull KR on Saturday week after ankle surgery.

Warrington have been linked with Elie El-Zakhem, the Lebanon secondrow who played for Castleford last season and is currently operating in the New South Wales Cup with Western Suburbs Magpies.

But while Musgrove’s move provides salary-cap and overseas quota space, Burgess, who will seek a first win in three Super League games as well as a pre-Wembley boost at home to Castleford on Friday, said there is no imminent business planned.

“It gives some flexibility, but there is nothing we are looking at right away,” he told the Warrington Guardian.

“We’ll be targeted in our approach and see what unfolds over the next month or two and if we can add to the roster.”
