Who's been here the longest?
yanto replied to hunsletgreenandgold's topic in The General Rugby League Forum
August 2004 it says on my profile but I think I go back further. Used to be a good crack with some real passionate characters. We even used to have meet ups at international games and always remember after one game v Kiwis ..I think.. we met in the George Hotel and led by Paly ( though he blamed me) a group of forum members gatecrashed a wedding reception in an adjacent room....fun night no malice and we were even offered some of the buffet. Anyone still got their TRL rugby shirts??? -

Back in the day..........Tommy Bishop had us entering the field to "Eye of the Tiger" . Unsure if the team had walked out to an "Anthem" before Bishop brought some Aussie style pomp and ceremony to the club. Who can remember the poles with big sponsors flags flying behind the popular side?. I don't think Bishop realised the Workington weather was a far cry from Cronulla and it wasn't long before the flags were battered and ripped by the West Cumbrian wind and rain.

From 1977 to 1988 I played on every pro/semi pro ground apart from one. To this day I still can't fathom our why I never played at Fartown ? Fav ground...The Old Boulevard in front of a full Threepenny stand.Awesome atmosphere.

Lancaster as a new semi-pro location
yanto replied to preid's topic in The General Rugby League Forum
I'm pretty sure Lancaster "donated " some hostel beds to Rotterdam RL players at York Nines . The year a ten year old linesman(young girl irc) robbed us of a quarter final victory over eventual winners East Hull. -
Netherlands v Scotland
yanto replied to yanto's topic in The International Rugby League Expansion and Development Forum
Poor to be honest. I think the way the camera followed...or didn't follow...the action and no zooming in or out makes be believe it was RC Bassets robotic camera. -
Many travelling ?? Lodging in Daventry and looking to head up to the game. Been a few years since I watched the team in the flesh

Netherlands Mens’ International Calendar 2024
yanto replied to Gomersall's topic in The General Rugby League Forum
As in Dutch players ?? I think the guys will be putting the internationals before the domestic RU games. Union season starts 7th September for the top division and 15th september for the lower divisions ,where most of the league guys play. Not really in "full swing". -
Ha posted together marra.

Kyle Amor stepping in for Jonty until the end of the season.

Emotional video on Havens Facebook page . Honest as the day is long.
-
Jonty Gorley walked away from the club after yesterdays game. No money now no coach. Looking bad at the moment for Haven.

European Under 19s Championship 2024 (Merged Threads)
yanto replied to Gomersall's topic in The General Rugby League Forum
You know how it goes. When I started RL in the Netherlands it was a strange time. Before anything had even really started me and the wife got an invite to attend the inaugural RLEF meeting in Paris saw Holland become members. Me as the only official and the wife as secretary So we started top down ...raided a few union clubs and put two sides out against a touring Scotland A and Scotland Students teams in front of Sky Sports !!!!! Kevin Rudd who was team manager of the Scots then became development officer for the RLEF and was a great help. At the time outside of the UK and France ,Russia and Serbia were the only active members. Out of nowhere we were hosting Georgia and a year later new boys Czech Republic. Still without a domestic comp (even though we did play incoming touring clubs and had two great Rotterdam Nines events ) we were invited to play in the first European championship which doubled up as a WC qualifying tournament with a superb trip to Tblisi and home games very Russia and Serbia. As you mentioned financial backing well everything was (and as far as I'm aware still is) self funding. Luckily I had a hard core of 20 lads keen to tour Europe playing rugby. Best pub team on the continent Kevin Rudd once described us. Any way that WC qualifying tournament burnt me out...again a point you make..and a public spat on boards like this with Kevin regarding funding ..which again you mention ...saw me walk away. The time the energy and the personal costs and commitment took its toll. That could have been the end, like you see in a few countries starting out when the enthusiastic one man band walks away, but luckily a Dutch Kiwi who came over to play in those early days resurrected the game after a two year gap. Jason did a fantastic job and as more teams popped up in Europe the opportunities to travel and play the game expanded. Domestic comp, official board and the Dutch are where they are today. It's taken 22 years from start to present day ,Long established Rotterdam Pitbulls pulled the plug this season due to lack of players. So nothing is really safe and the whole structure vulnerable. Back to the point...there must be 40 plus guys and a few girls who have RLEF qualifications that are no longer involved. Still everything is self funded with I believe no more RLEF support...was less than 3000 a year. The game is only surviving due to thick skinned die in the wool league guys keeping it together. This can be said in virtually every developing nation on the continent. So yes if the RLEF want to establish the game then they need to re assess their commitment because 22 years down the road since I took the plunge nothing has really changed. Bit of a ramble that when I look back but guys doing the yards will know what I'm on about. -
European Under 19s Championship 2024 (Merged Threads)
yanto replied to Gomersall's topic in The General Rugby League Forum
Potential yes ...reality very different. 100/150 new coaches in new areas sounds great but who do they coach or referee? I have witnessed this in Europe where 30 or 40 people yearly in developing nations get coaching certificates then do nothing. What's the point of spending money like this when before (or alongside) the coaches you need players and administrators to set up teams/ clubs for these coaches to coach. Maybe courses on that aspect would be a truer legacy. People go back with a vision and plan of what it takes to set a club up from scratch. In Holland 90% of the people who sit on these courses do not use their qualifications because there are no team's to coach. They don't want the work or maybe dont have the knowledge and enthusiasm to set up new clubs. Even getting into schools or setting up youth teams just hasn't happened. Same as the referees. Not knocking what they are doing but it just seems from my experience to be numbers exercise.
