Sun 14th Apr: The Betfred League One Match Thread
gogledd replied to John Drake's topic in The General Rugby League Forum
Wins for North Wales Crusaders (just), Hunslet (just) Oldham and Hornets. Midlands could be the surprise result and they could come up with a win; they certainly pushed us all the way at Eirias Park. Cant see anything but a win for Oldham and Hornets, although Newcastle did come strong in the second half last weekend. Can Crusaders beat Keighley at Cougar Park? We've not got a great record there and realistically its a big ask, but not impossible. We'll have to be at our very best if we do want to win and cut out the silly penalties and unforced errors. -

I was supposed to be in Ireland playing Masters RL against Leinster Stags on Saturday....but after two aborted landings in Dublin our plane was diverted to Manchester it meant I was able to get to the North Wales Crusaders game yesterday (Sunday)!! After the first half in Eirias Park yesterday I was expecting Crusaders to romp away to 70 points...it wasn't to be. Thunder put up a spirited performance in the second half and really deserved their 18 points. Crusaders slipped into poor discipline again - although we've won 3 from 3, we need to improve our discipline overall. -
Great to see a thread on this game on TRL. Congratulations to Catalans Dragons, what a fantastic team they have. But..... why isn't this featured on the RFL socila media feeds? why isn't the game reported on the BBC Sport Rugby League pages but only found on the Disability Sport pages? Wheelchair RL is an elite sport for people with disabilities...

World Cup 20xx. Will it ever happen?
gogledd replied to JohnM's topic in The General Rugby League Forum
Hi Both, I don't want to divert the thread too much but since you both asked about my travels to PNG heres a brief response. I flew independently, and not as part of the Wales entourage - so it wasn't cheep! Its as hot as a blast furnace once you get off the plane! The Wales mens Team Manager is a friend, and ex-police officer - he advised me NOT to go - the Foreign Office advice is scary! I reached out to people on Facebook who were in PNG and had links to Wales to help me. One was a nephew of a North Wales Crusaders fan who worked in PNG, the other was one of the RLWC2017 organisers on the ground in PNG. They advised me to stay in a hotel with armed security - I picked the Crowne Plaza; the hotel arranged to pick me up from the airport. One of the guys took me out into Port Moresby on the night before the game for a few beers and to watch the opening game of the tournament on TV in the hotel where Wales tem were stopping (The Stanley). I was driven to the game (after an amazing Chinese meal) but friends of the organiser. I had a ticket gifted to me by the WRL so I was in the air-cooled corporate bit rather than baking out in the blistering heat! The atmosphere was unreal! I've never heard such a noise in a stadium. The fans are absolutely fanatical about RL. Wales lost but at least scored in the last minute. After the game I blagged a lift back to the team hotel in the kit van, as I'd got split up from the guys who took me to the stadium. Wales had a police escort back to their hotel which was lined with hundreds and hundres of people wanting to wave to the players or get souvenirs. To be honest, I really didn't go out of the hotel unless I was accompanied by someone who knew Port Moresby or when I went to the game....basically I flew in for the game and out again after, back to Australia. I met some lovely lads from Canterbury Bulldogs in my hotel. They'd been out helping to construct a school somewhere in PNG. They shared a taxi with me back to the airport and game me a Bulldogs polo shirt! I'm glad I did it. I'm glad I made arrangements before going and went with the knowledge I had contacts to help me. I'd love to have seen more of Port Moresby and PNG but everyone warns you of the consequences of getting caught up in criminal activities. Would I go again.... yes, purely for rugby league purposes though. -
World Cup 20xx. Will it ever happen?

I was involved in the Wheelchair competition and have to say that the RLWC was a fantastic experience for the teams involved. I was Team Manager for Wales and we felt totally included in the World Cup... our players were payed pro rata and had proper facilities and stadia.... and the TV coverage meant the game got thousands of people watching some amazing athletes. And although Wales got knocked out in the semi-finals, I went to watch the final in Manchester and that was one of the best live rugby league experiences I can remember. -

I volunteered in 2013 and travelled independently in 2017 to follow Wales in PNG, Townsville and Perth - then on to Wellington, and Brisbane - 7 weeks. I'd planned ahead for France and was one of the reasons I bought a motorhome! Now those plans are scuppered I'm still hoping to go to RLWC 2026 - and sincerely hope the International game gets its act together pretty soon. -
What's the best game you've been to?

Best SL Game St Helens v Catalans Dragons. Catalans scored on the hooter to equalise and Scott Deureau slotted the kick to win Best North Wales Crusaders game Any of last seasons play off run Best Wheelchair game 2017 RLWC Wheelchair final between England and France Best Challenge Cup Warrington vs Hull 2016. I sang 'Abide with Me' with the Fans choir, on th epitch before kick off Best game I played in Wales Masters RL vs Ireland vs England in Bethesda 2022. My first cap for Wales! -
I thought the Hurricanes gave as good as we expected and dominates periods of the game leaving Crusaders relying on the defence - which, in the main stood up well agains a dogged and determined attack. We have to make better decisions with the ball in hand and not gift opportunities to our opposition. Well played Hurricanes; it was a game either side could have won - I'm just glad we had that bit more experience in our team.

So far, a convincing win for Keighley and an expected win for Workington - although it wasn't as big a difference as I was expecting. First home game of the season for the North Wales Cru...we had a bye in Round 1, won away at Cornwall last weekend... a great first half but intensity dropped second half. Midlands are up and running with a big score against Newcastle, so it will be interesting to see how the Hurricanes have developed since last season. The games between the 'Canes (or the Coventry Bears) and us have always been close with us losing out on a couple of occasions. I think it could be a close game - but North Wales Crusaders will win. I just went onto the OurLeague app and the Championship and League 1 tables are still set at the finish of the season 2023 - pretty disappointing considering its an RFL backed enterprise. Do they really care about games outside the Super League? Oldham will beat Hornets handsomely.

Sun 24th Mar: The Betfred League One Match Thread

Just go back in from the Cornwall game. Travelled down on Saturday. Overnight on Saturday and Sunday night in Truro - so luckily the ground swap/ time cahnge didn't effect the fans that travelled down to support the Crusaders. What was a shock was we played on a 4G pitch in a college - no seating, standing area behind the goals, no food, no drink...I'm sure that when North Wales Crusaders applies last year (18th June) to have a game at Eirias Park on the second pitch, we were turned down - even though we still had the same changing rooms, access to hospitality a bar and food.... the RFL seem to have been very lenient with Cornwall allowing the game to go ahead with severely limited facilities. ....That said, I'm glad it wen ahead as it would have been a long trip to find out it was postponed! First half, we were clinical with very few errors and hardly a penalty. We seemed to drop our concentration second half and Cornwall upped their game scoring some nice tries - although the final one was well after the hooter should have gone! Looking forward to next weeks game at Eirias Park - only a 92 mile round trip for this one! -

If your referring to Harry Aaronsen - he played this week for Cornwall -
I've been watching some of the Carcassonne games via their YouTube presence. Look like a very competent side. If, as is suspected, they do come into League 1, how do you think they would get on?

Back up and running again. Thanks for getting the forum back up to speed. Very much appreciate the work that goes into hosting the forums

Restructure of Championship and League 1
gogledd replied to Rene_Artois's topic in The General Rugby League Forum
I still remember 2014 when North Wales Crusaders got booted out of the Champions ship when FIVE were demoted to League 1 in one season. I'm glad at least they're not repeating that scenario for the current Championship crop of teams. The whole promotion system between Ch and L1 seems very skewed to favouring Championship teams who are generally better funded and have larger and more experienced squads. I'm not saying L1 teams can't get promoted but it now seems harder....theres only one guaranteed promotion spot for the L1 winners, the playoff winners now have to beat Championship opposition after battling through the end of season rounds of the playoffs. At least I suppose we all know what hurdles us L1 teams face. -
Chester Gladiators RLFC. Or Carcassonne

The team I follow week in week out.... North Wales Crusaders, since their formation in 2011. Previously i followed Crusaders RL in Super League - but on their demise decided Catalans Dragons could do with my support whenever I get a chance to watch them (in the UK and France) The teams I managed for ten years until recently...North Wales Crusaders Wheelchair Rugby League and Wales Wheelchair Rugby League The teams I play for....Chester Gladiators Masters RL are my club team...and I'm very proud to play for Wales Masters RL when selected (6 caps so far).... and since their formation in Wales, the Armed Forces Associates Masters RL. I'm also looking forward to playing in the Wales Masters Origin Series this season (as one of the exiles - although I live in Wales I'm classed as an exile because I play for Chester).

Well played Swinton, a well deserved win. Ill discipline cost us we has a spell of 11 v 13 plus at least 60 minutes of 12 v 13; given that 12 - 40 was about the best we could hope for. A decent second half from Crusaders in very blustery conditions. I'll probably go along to the Swinton v Widnes game next weekend to see how the two Championship sides do against each other.

League 1 stadiums video
gogledd replied to The Hallucinating Goose's topic in The General Rugby League Forum
Midlands Hurricanes didn't play inside the Alexander Stadium last season, but on the training pitch you can see outside the stadium on the aerial shots. I think they're moving inside this season. Stadium CSM (Eirias Park, Colwyn Bay) has a lot more going for it than a few scruffy hedges! -
The Wales players and staff are all self-funding to get to the USA to play this game. They need mone for flights and accommodation. So if you can please give a few quid on their crowdfunder page: https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/walestouroftheusa?fbclid=IwAR0mW_04wgEKn9R7YcFgTSQT9-p11G7QknqdkKIIKab47yz45L9NyQN8Bs8
