Too many RL fans including myself who used to go to nearly all the big games are now of a certain age that don't go as much or anymore. Then you have fans of lower league clubs who didn't like the selfishness that some involved in SL became and turned their backs as well. Also a lot of the younger generation only consider going when it is their local team there.
