The Fourth Protocol...

Concussion protocols.

I see the Aussies are being allowed to field a batting substitute for Smith on Day 5 of the Test.  Now bearing in mind he came out again after being hit yesterday, I'm not sure they should allow this on Day 5.

But let's leave that for now - and look at the principle of bringing in a fresh player if an oringinal one gets concussed. Should this be brought in for RL, either bringing in an extra substitute or additional replacements?

The cricket situation is a little different.  Subs in cricket have only ever been allowed to field, they are not allowed to bat or bowl.

If one of the key goals of concussion protocols is to discourage players from continuing with head injuries then having a 'full' sub is sensible.

With four on the bench for Rugby League we already have players who can replace one of the 13 on the field.

It is pretty rare for teams to be down to zero subs available even in the era where players are withdrawn after failing a HIA.

Another element to consider. If a  coach had an18th man available would they feign HIA to get a fresh/specialist player on the pitch. You would hope not but you wouldn't put it past some.

He shouldn’t have been sent back out to bat regardless of whether he wanted to or not. Protection of athletes with head injuries really does need to improve.

In rugby league if a player is ruled and only played a very minor part in the game, say less than 10 minutes, the 18th man should come onto the bench IMO.
