League 1 Play Off Confusion

The odd situation would be if we lose.  We'd then have a preliminary-final at the Vestacare Stadium but then a win would send us to a final away from home.

Here is the League 1 play-off system.

... and yes it does seem odd that the losers of the 2nd semi-final are at home in their next match, yet the winners of that game are then away in the final.  I would of thought it better (and rewarded the teams who had a superior league record during the whole season) if the highest-placed team were at home in every match irrespective of how the teams got there.

To get to the final Newcastle now have to beat Workington and then the loser of Oldham and Doncaster.

Oldham and Doncaster just have to win one, and even if they lose get another chance

Now we're approaching round two of the play-offs, we know that the final will be played at the Vestacare or Keepmoat Stadium.

Losing to Doncaster means that Newcastle have to beat Workington at home, then travel to Oldham or Doncaster (the loser of our game on Sunday), beat one of those two then travel to Oldham or Doncaster (the winner of our game on Sunday) for the final.

We've just got to win two games to be promoted and the first of those is at home.

Read the small print at the bottom of the picture below, home venue for all play off games will be decided by the highest ranked team.  So, even if we lose on Sunday we play at home in the final (if we get there).

Blummin eck, you're right.  I was using what appears to be an older version of the explanatory poster that doesn't have the highest ranked team bit.  Grrrrrr!

Sooooo.  The final will be one of:

Doncaster v Workington

Newcastle v Doncaster

Oldham v Workington

Oldham v Doncaster

Oldham v Newcastle
