Robin Evans
Another Indonesian 737 goes down. No survivors are expected. Its not an 800 max this time. An older 500 series. Indonesia have an appalling approach to safety, lacking and procedural standard or culture towards air safety. Ban them from international travel until the achieve regular auditable air safety standsrds

From a UK perspective, the only Indonesian carrier flying here recently was Garuda, and they’ve put significant resources into sorting their safety and training, which has so far satisfied overseas regulators. Domestic and regional operations in Indonesia are a different kettle of fish of course. The aviation industry has boomed over the last twenty years and safe practices are making way for rapid expansion.

The aviation industry has boomed over the last twenty years and safe practices are making way for rapid expansion. Indeed, cutting corners on pilot training and plane maintenance seems to be the main cause, although there are now a lot of domestic flights. Prior to 2001 there were only a handful of domestic carriers, until they deregulated and 7+ new companies suddenly appeared. The original airlines pretty much ceased to exist very shortly afterwards as they couldn't compete with the cost-cutting budget airlines. Back in 2000, you would very rarely see an Indonesian on a flight, but now with a growing economy and cheap flights (prior to covid) means foreigners are scarce. Garuda have clearly upped their standards, but their prices are slightly higher than others, so are usually a last resort for domestic passengers. Ramon Rojo
There's a rather informative video from the Flight Channel people currently available on YouTube about this incident. Obviously no firm conclusions regarding why the crash occurred (yet) but decent background on the culture and safety record of the aviation industry in Indonesia. Copa
The old joke used to be “Merpati? Pasti mati!” (Flying Merpati? You’ll definitely die!) ... it rhymes much better in the abbreviated Indonesian version. I once flew from Sulawesi to Java in business class in ‘98. As soon as we reached a decent altitude 100s of cockroaches started pouring out of the gaps everywhere. Those things can absolutely trash electronics. Last time I flew into Jakarta some idiot was pointing a powerful laser at the plane for ages. It was really annoying. That’s just a few of my interesting experiences with flying in Indonesia.
