I think the crux of this thread is that sport is one of very few forms of entertainment where our satisfaction is based almost completely on hope rather than taste. For example, I know that if I see a comedy film, there's a greater than average chance I'll walk away happy but when I go and watch a sports game, I go into it knowing that there is a very real possibility that I'll walk away miserable.

The people that mutter to themselves, "I'm not watching anymore" simply cannot view sport for what it is, which is a form of entertainment.

If you've ever thrown abuse at a ref, consider whether you'd do the same at the theatre if you weren't enjoying the play.
