The Hills Hoist is an Australian invention - a rotary clothes dryer that our family had when I was young. Brits may recognise the design (or re-branded knock-offs) more readily than the actual name.

The amateur RL club has been around for a few years now, founded in 2008.

I am very seriously looking at coming out of retirement, after 30 years, and lacing the boots for Masters rugby league in 2024.

My main concern is that if Shaun Wane comes knocking, I will have to make a serious decision about my availability for England.

On the other hand, if Mal Meninga asks if I have any Australian heritage, I am very happy to tell him to shove it.

Sorry wasn’t taking the pee. Given I’m 60 “hoist” made me think of mobility aids! Possibly not inappropriate.

Why not give it a go to see if you enjoy it?

The emphasis is firmly on fun and socialising. All Masters games officially end 0-0 (though everyone knows if they’ve won 0-0 or lost 0-0 ).

I’ve always thought it’s a cool name. So many teams choose names without any link to the history or identity of their club or town, which is a shame. I personally would have chosen something a bit more intimidating than a laundry accoutrement, but I suppose one of those things could do some damage if uprooted by a strong wind.

Yeah, I don’t think a menacing mascot was on their mind at the Shay Bu when the club was inaugurated. More, a laugh at what would be the most ridiculous. I know both the Black Boxes and Goon Bags were on the cards before Hills Hoists came out on top.
