Report: 2025 World Cup on verge of collapse
pahars replied to goldcoaster's topic in The General Rugby League Forum
The 2019 World Athletics Championship was poorly attended and that same years World Beach Games basically had nobody in the stadiums despite being free to enter. Qatar didn’t seem to care, they just like holding world events and have the money to do so. -
Not a very well researched article as Sam Boyd Stadium is permanently closed as part of the deal to get UNLV in Allegiant stadium.

FC Barcelona Rugby League 2008-2010
pahars replied to gingerjon's topic in The General Rugby League Forum
Fair enough. In the professional men’s league 15 out of 16 teams are in Catalonia and the other is in Galicia with Catalan players. -
FC Barcelona Rugby League 2008-2010

It’s questionable whether Barca’s approach is sustainable. All the big football clubs used to be multisports but Real Madrid cut down to just football and basketball and Atletico, Valencia and Espanyol cut everything else years ago. -

They binned Baseball, which was a niche sport, but had been played since the 1930’s and had several hundred junior players. The Basketball section is still going and one of the most successful in Europe. Roller hockey is pretty big in Catalonia and pockets of Italy and Portugal but pretty much unheard of in the rest of Spain and Europe. -
FC Barcelona Rugby League 2008-2010

I can vaguely remember people talking on here about it. It was a reasonably exciting prospect at the time. Just after that Barca had their first (of many) financial crises and cut funding to a lot of their amateur teams. Including binning the 80 year olds baseball section, which caused a big stink, so I’ve got a feeling RL would have the same way. -
That’s for their elected representatives to do. Which makes you think they just aren’t interested in paying for events. Ignoring the cherry on the top benefits to the people who elected them in the local economy, if they don’t think that they can make an actual game day profit from a tournament that once got 17,500 then maybe they ain’t the kind of people you want to be partnering with.
-
I’m merely suggesting that we shouldn’t undersell our event. The Marie says he could do five events for that much, maybe this is true, but if it’s local people driving to and from a concert it has little value to the local economy. Events that draw people from outside the area are worth a lot more because people spend on a couple of days of hotels/restaurants/bars/taxis/excursions etc.
-
I suppose it depends how many people it would attract to the area. All it would take is 1,000 people spending over €200 to justify it as a boost to the local economy. I would have thought England games would go for a lot more.

NRL in talks to expand to 20 teams
pahars replied to The Daddy's topic in The General Rugby League Forum
I wouldn’t worry about it, the Auckland Kings/NZ Knights hardly set the world on fire and the A league is a proper farmers league. The only concern for the NRL (or even cricket, AFL and RU for that matter) is that the sprogs of soccer Moms end up following European football on TV. -
Ipswich Jets - Western Corridor Team Next?

It would only be a ‘complete waste of money’ if it brought zero events in to the area. Whether or not it brings in enough money to justify the construction cost and maintenance is another question. At the end of the day Northern England is full of 25k council built stadiums that are hardly ever even half full. -
Ipswich Jets - Western Corridor Team Next?
pahars replied to The Daddy's topic in The General Rugby League Forum
The local council built it to attract events and pro sports to the area. It’s kind of worked with annual NRL games, an A league team, occasional RU internationals and music concerts. -

Central Coast Stadium was built by Central Coast Council not the state government or ARL/NRL. -
Ipswich Jets - Western Corridor Team Next?

And crucially they would stop or not start taking their kids to NRL games. Indeed they might pass on a bitterness towards the NRL to them and then that generation turns to other sports. Sydney is a wealthy city, full of big companies that within most of our lifetimes will grow to a similar size to London or Paris. Better to keep a vice like grip on it then to chase much smaller markets with little corporate support. -
Ipswich Jets - Western Corridor Team Next?

Sydney’s population is predicted to be well over 8 million by 2050. Culling teams would play straight in to competitor sports hands. -
Greatest/Classic Sponsors on a Shirt
pahars replied to Mumby Magic's topic in The General Rugby League Forum
Didn’t GB’s shirt sponsor go straight from think don’t drink to Guinness? -
It is the small scaffolding bleacher type benches at either end that need removing so won’t make much difference to the game day experience. As has been said it will probably be good for the club as the new stand that was confirmed last October is now needed more and the Marie has reason to justify the €15 million investment.

Having thoroughly resea… done a bit of Googling about this. It appears that a lot of the Australian political support for an NRL PNG team is tied to soft power influence for promoting women’s wellness. As there has never been a multinational sports league between two nations so financially mismatched nations before- I like it as a carrot. In the meantime though, considering there are double/lot more/the fella down the didn’t get counted in the highlands couldn’t another Queensland Cup team with both male and female pathways do a lot of good?

I agree, I wouldn’t expect developing RL to be anywhere near a African government’s agenda, never mind the top. I think it would be a good idea for the RL community to help have a well organised niche domestic tournament, with international opportunities. Eventually all sports will begin a race for Africa’s sports dollars. Let’s try and get something modest but successful established before that. As I said tiny acorns.
-
While on the subject of Africa there are predictions it’s population could almost treble by 2100, with Europe and Asia having a decline on their current numbers. Tying it back to RL international development the fact that Nigeria could be the 2nd most populous nation on earth in 80 years means the tiny acorns we have there now need nurturing.

Of course the data would be woeful for all the reasons I outlined in the post you replied to. The point was that rather then people being useless or making things up they doing the best they could with the available data. It doesn’t matter what century you’re in if you don’t keep records of your population. The domesday book was nearly 1,000 years ago.

They don’t count people in the UK. They go on to national databases that have births, marriages and deaths, electoral role, taxpayers, benefit claimants, pensioners, children in education etc etc and on top of that we have a census every few years. None of that bureaucracy exists in rural PNG and it’s not the type of place you turn up at a remote village and start asking questions. The figure may have been an accurate reflection of the data they actually had rather then an estimate.
