17th NRL Club Developments

Recommended Posts

It`s all happening.

Billy Slater announced as Queensland`s Coach. Bring it on Billy vs. Freddy, that`s got to be worth another few mill in the broadcast deal negotiations.

17th team announced before the GF. More for the TV deal and we know what 17 means, it means 18`s next and I can`t see them waiting too long for that. 5 years ?

And to top it off, the NRL outrate the afl in the first two weeks of the finals series. In fact if they included NZ, like they should, we are one country/market for all intents and purposes, comfortably over 10m viewers for the first six games of the finals series. Kicking ass, as they say.

Originally scheduled for 2023, Peter V'landys has now said it could be a year later in 2024.

As for Dolphins:

REDCLIFFE DOLPHINS

Currently playing in the Queensland Cup competition, there will be no alteration to their name and Redcliffe appear to be the strongest bid from a financial perspective.

They will be based out of Moreton Daily Stadium, where multiple NRL games have been held recently, and will play home games at Suncorp Stadium as well.

Redcliffe have a whopping $100 million worth of assets, and the leagues club next door to the ground has a yearly turnover of approximately $34 million.

In their favour is a rich history since 1947, winning six premierships in Queensland and also having a strong supporter group.

Exciting times indeed. Where would you most like to see team 18 come from?

Where did you get those tv figures from Rocket?

New Zealand or Perth?

I would love to see the sport take advantage in Perth that is still poorly represented by either rugby code in the form of the Force.

The short term benefit of setting up NZ2 may just be a little too enticing for the NRL. Certainly those neutrals that are more interested in the international aspect of our sport will find that NZ2 will go a long way to benefiting their preferred objective.

This might be controversial, but I believe the parochial NRL will have to expand its geographical boundaries if it is to be relevant and successful in the future. Whatever we may think about AFL, it appears to me that they have been more successful in moving away from their roots to be a national sport than the NRL has to date and this will surely be reflected in future TV deals. It has to be Perth (or take on a big fight in Adelaide), not another Queensland team or a second New Zealand club. They could be clubs 19 and 20 by 2030!

I'd like to see Perth and Adelaide, but that isn't as interesting as what is most likely to happen.

What's most likely to happen depends on which club wins the 17th license and whom is in charge of the ARLC and NRL at the time-

If Redcliffe or Ipswich win 17 then Bris3 or NZ2 are most likely to win 18.

If the Firehawks win 17 then NZ2 or Perth are most likely to win 18.

However if PVL is replaced as chairman of the ARLC by the time the decision for the 18th license is made then all bets are off.
