Wane is the type of coach that instead of encouraging the players to keep playing the way they did in the PNG game he would have spent the whole time complaining about PNGs 6 points. He does put a lot of detail into his coaching so maybe overcoaches at times, but maybe before the semi final he should have just said “the important thing is that we win, even if we end up making 20 errors in the process.” That might have got the players in a more positive frame of mind than putting all the focus on not making any errors and putting the players under more pressure than what they would have been feeling.

No coach should have been happy with the England performance in the PNG game. It was staggering that even the pundits who should know better seemed to be cheerleading and going on about how great England were playing yet didn't really take any time to point out that the PNG defence in that first half was utterly shambolic and possibly one of the worst defensive displays of the entire world cup. All they did in the second half to tighten it up was defend like a team rather than having individuals running out attempting one on one tackles on the likes of Burgess and leaving obvious holes in their defensive lines.

The problem is we had it so easy that everyone seemed to get carried away. I notice Jamie Peacock has been critical saying England were overhyped at the start and got progressively worse, which is just nonsense. England would have been slaughtered by people like him if we'd lost the opener to Samoa. How can you not get off to a quick start when Samoa turn up and play that badly and your next games are against France, Greece and PNG. That opening game was the worst thing to happen to England because people came into the world cup knowing that Samoa and Tonga were now the strongest they've ever been because of their NRL contingent. As soon as England hammer Samoa and Tonga start off a bit slow people seemed to forget it. Can't blame people for dreaming but the reality is the NRL is the breeding ground for international RL. In England I think we just assume we'll always be 3rd best at worst but the truth is if we keep picking from a mainly Super League player base we're only going in one direction compared to Australia, NZ, Samoa and Tonga and their ever growing pool of players from the games elite competition.

Nope.

England were magnificent in the first half against PNG.

PNG were not allowed to play.

Seems long ago and far away now.
