How to Market a Club

Recommended Posts

I listen to a couple of non league football podcasts and stumbled across this.

It's a podcast from a volunteer at Nairn County in Scotland explaining how he markets the club. It starts from scratch and explains things step by step. He had no budget and most was done remotely as he lives in Glasgow. He's managed to grow attendances and increase sales etc.

For context, Nairn have an average attendance of about 300

I thought If anyone here is involved at any level with their club, or knows someone who is, then this may be an interesting listen and a helpful resource.

The people who drove Dulwich Hamlet FC from an average crowd of 170 to around 3000 on Saturdays are League fans. One has passed but the other would almost certainly share ideas / results with league clubs if asked. He certainly has with various non league football clubs.

Obviously with staring gates of 170 there wasn't much of a marketing budget in the early days. They don't posses a miracle cure and it's unlikely anyone could pick up and run with their entire plan but their experience and knowledge could help shape other teams strategies.

The duo offered to pass their ideas on to Broncos for free, one is a season ticket holder the other was a reasonably regular attendee. Broncos cancelled the meeting and refused to re-arrange. Apparently they have nothing to learn about how to grow crowds

How arrogant is that. Everyone, even the top marketing people understand that there is always something to learn from someone. You can sometimes get the most insight from the most unexpected and, yes, the lowliest of places.

This makes me so angry and is half the reason that I'm so brutal when it comes to asking clubs to prove financial solvency without central funding. Any help from proven sources should at least be heard if you are continually proving that you can't do it alone.
