week 1 of the nrl finals usually gets poorish crowds as well

since many of the finals dont mean anything for the top teams as they arent sudden death its seen more as a revenue raising excercise.

weeks 2 and 3 are where the action hots up

and still the crowds you mention are very impressive

i suspect well go from 15,000 - 30,000 for week 1 crowds in the nrl which isnt far off yours

penrith will probably only get 10,000 - 13,000 for their home semi

Gold Coast vs NZ Warriors should get 25,000 and Wests vs Sydney Roosters 30,000 - 32,000.

Penrith will get over 15,000. St George vs Manly will be only 16-18,000 because Manly has no chance.

So Hull FC, Wigan and St Helens should do better than the two lesser NRL crowds, but worse than the two bigger NRL crowds.

Huddersfield crowd will be a bomb that brings down the average. What a pity.

The trouble is, these games will have had massive media exposure down under, compared to barely a quarter page for all fixtures over here, due to footy, cricket etc.

Give us more hype here in the press, and crowds could well increase, if not to match those figures, at least to challenge stadia capacities.

Perhaps the solution is to nail down the play offs next year as a six team comp.

A Hull derby, Wigan v Saints and Leeds v Wire. The games could then be included in season tickets and will probably sell out and everyone will be happy. its the uncertainty and lack of planning that spoiling the thing.

If things carry on like they are now we will all have to forget about what's going on in the stands and just concentrate on what's happening on the pitch.

why should the RFL lose valuable revenues?

So the NRL attracted nearly double the crowds of the Super League.

It is true that Super League has nothing like the mass media publicity of the NRL. But that does not explain why there were only 9,987 at the Wigan vs Leeds game. All the fans of the two best supported clubs knew the match was on. But they just failed to show up.

Moreover the NRL games were all live on terrestrial television (Channel 9). No one had to pay to watch the TV.

Clearly there are more Aussies who follow rugby league, and they are more passionate about their clubs than people from the northern so-called heartlands of English rugby league. That is why Australia is number 1.

The only hope for the northern hemisphere is to get more passionate French people involved. That entails giving them their own Super League clubs in Toulouse in 2012, and later in Paris.
