What a welcome in PNG

Dear old Albo…..if only it were that simple. This was a one off all star game that used to be played annually but hasnt happened in PNG since before the pandemic. Not a run of the mill game that happens every other week for 27 weeks.

Any team ‘based in PNG’ would struggle to recruit a squad of sufficient numbers and talent. Which players would be willing to move their families to PNG…..ones with no other realistic options.

What admission prices would they charge in PNG? Implications for revenues?

Do the hunters charge admission price? How much and what are the crowds like?

Remember the most recent expansion was determined by financial considerations primarily. What would the club contribute to the games finances which is why a bid from an extremely prosperous organisation was selected.  How would a PNG based club add to the games financial wealth…its the only language Vlandys and his batman know.

Re ticket prices.. look at Tiket Mastas

The upcoming PNG v Cook Islands match is around AUD$17 to AUD$55 for a ticket.

Some older Png hunters season ticket prices are in this article. The most expensive option is around AUD$1390 for 11 games

Interesting insight that I've never really seen investigated before.

The Digicel sponsorship of the Kumuls and Orchids from 2022-2024 is worth the equivalent of $1 Million AUD per year.

Current Australian Government is believed to be committed to pledging $20 Million AUD a year to a PNG NRL bid for 10 years if they were to be admitted in the NRL. Somewhat a drop in the ocean considering the $600 Million in foreign aid currently committed to PNG, especially considering the political capital involved. Granted - the historical volatility of Australian government adds a significant caveat to that funding.

Financially the PNG bid could be done in the right circumstances. Unfortunately despite their performances discussed in this thread over the weekend they are probably at least a decade off having the player production systems required to make it happen properly.

I think everyone realises that it isn't going to happen without massive Government subsidies underwriting it. If that is forthcoming then nothing is insurmountable.

The problem with government subsidies is they are unsustainable in a political environment and unpopular among tax payers. I can just see the furore should, hypothetically speaking, a png based team funded in large part by Aus government was to beat a NSW team in the play offs.

There might be a curreny problem with that season ticket price….they wouldnt sell many season tickets at that price. My broncos season ticket is AUD$170.

Trying to do the conversion using the local currency stated in the article i think it works out at about $10AUD per game…which is the regular admission price for QRL games. Never having been to PNG ( but going next March) i am guessing 10 AUD is quite expensive locally.

The article says it’s K3290 ($1400) for the most expensive and K217 ($92.60) for the cheapest Hunters season ticket.

The most expensive package is also mentioned in this 2017 article too, so it’s not a typo. https://www.looppng.com/sport/nfs-launches-season-membership-packages-52562

Is there much RL activity in Solomon Islands and Vanuatu? Do they have ex pat communities in Australia and NZ

The Solomon Islands are really into soccer. Im not sure how that came about, but they are the only Pacific nation where soccer is the most popular sport. Although the French territories of New Caledonia and Tahiti also favour soccer over rugby

Highlights of the Junior Kumuls v Australian Schoolboys fixture for those interested.

That really is a terrific effort from the Junior Kumuls.
