In this week's episode of the League Express Podcast, Jake Kearnan and I are joined by the York RLFC Chairman Clint Goodchild to discuss York's quest to reach Super League status, the club's goals for 2025 and when they expect to be promoted to the top tier.
We discuss Clint's business career, his humble upbringing in a small regional town in Western Queensland and what persuaded him to buy York in 2022.
We discuss the future of the sport and, given Clint's experience in the USA, whether the game could be sold to American fans.
And we focus on the success of the York Valkyrie.

I enjoyed this episode, seems like he has big plans for York.

Yes it was a good watch Eddie, but I question his 'young player long term plan' policy, Leigh has brought one of his young stars to the LSV a 21 year old 6'-2", 15st-2lb winger AJ Towse who has played 67 games for York and has a score return of 35 tries in those 67 appearences, I would have thought he fits Mr Goodchilds plans perfectly, perhaps if any York fans ( @RBKnight ) read this I would be interested in their thoughts as to AJ's form and ability and what they thought of him being allowed to leave, surely I would have thought Mr Goodchilds vision for the club, a long term contract, right money and being 'home town' lad would persuade him to stay.

I had Towse in mind when he was discussing his long term/young player strategy as well.

I suppose the bottom line will be that the option of a full-time contract/better pay/SL football will make it almost impossible to retain anyone wanted by a SL club.

But that does beg the question of how his strategy can succeed if that scenario repeats itself with other promising players.

I think the interest from Leigh came quite early last season, so York may well have made an offer, with AJ turning it down to pursue a SL chance. He is a smart cookie, graduating last year from York St Johns University with a 1st Class honours Computing degree, and has already established his own website design and consultancy business:

If a SL club come in with a significantly bigger salary offer the player would be nuts not to take it tbf.

But Mr Goodchild seemed quite confident in his plan of keeping young players at his club for the long haul to SL.

I think he said he’d prefer to sign players like that than 35 year old experienced pros going into their final season, which makes sense? I don’t think he said they could keep them all, but rather they give them longer contracts.

Strong and athletic, not Tee Ritson fast but no slouch, good under the high ball in attack and defence. Would be surprised to see him starting many games in SL next year. Had a good game against Leigh in the Challenge Cup in 2023 (he was the recipient of the Zak Hardaker "throw" that earned ZH a spell in the bin)

An example of AJ's althleticism and game awareness below at 5.28 :-

Again, an excellent prog. If you haven't watched it, I can only recommend that you do. Seriously. Great to hear from a such a dynamic and positive club owner.
