Great Britain are going to play a senior men's international in Britain for the first time in ... probably a decade.

The tortuous process of qualifying for the 2025 World Championship (spoiler: they will not qualify) begins on Thursday 2nd November with the first leg of a two leg elimination tie versus Finland.

Finland last made the World Championship in 1958 (spoiler: they will not qualify), Great Britain have never qualified for any tournament.

Entirely expectedly, Finland are up at the break although only ahead by 3.

GB look like what they are: a somewhat scratch side whose real victory is getting back on the court at this level.

Haven't watched Handball since 25+ years ago when it was on a German channel somewhere on Sky.

Watched a few minutes of this match on youtube just to refresh my memory. It's alright, but probably not something I will watch again in a hurry.

GB lost 16-25, which hopefully they won't be too disappointed with.

Very scrappy game but GB were pleased with how they performed and are pleased to be backing up some good Euro qualifying performances and also some decent U19 and U17 performances in men's and women's matches.

All entirely self-funded though which means they can't afford to take a full compliment of subs to the away leg in Finland today so I suspect it will be a heavier defeat than 9 this time.

Home against Kosovo in Euro qualifying in, I think, January.

The first leg away at Kosovo is today, the return is on Saturday in Derby. Both live on ehftv.

Meanwhile, the Euro 2024 handball in Germany gets underway today with 53,000 expected in for a one-off spectacular between the hosts and Switzerland. The Germans are somewhat nervous that the Swiss may spoil their party. That's live on Viaplay, or should be.

GB lost by too big a margin to come back on Saturday but hopefully will put on a show.

Yesterday, 10% of the entire population of the Faroes were in a hall in Berlin to watch them lose by three goals to Slovenia.

Meanwhile, today, Iceland, for whom Reykjavik must also be a fair bit emptier, played out a dramatic draw with Serbia. The Icelanders were quite a few people's dark horse tips for a top 4 finish - that's not happening based on this afternoon.

Decent tournament so far.
