Julia Lee used to referee in Hull in the mid/late 80’s but in youth!  Not sure when she stepped up to OA.  She works, or used to work for the RFL.

Could be wrong but I think she went to Oz and became the first, or one of ‘em, female ref there.
Good referee.

She reffed in London as well.

Back in the 90s a very well known rugby league coach refused to send his team onto the field because a woman was refereeing. Myself and the other touch judge told her to brazen it out and make sure the game was awarded to the opposition, unfortunately she didn’t feel confident that the RFL would back her up and I reffed.

After the game he came up to her and said “sorry but I’m sure you understand”

She told him to eff off left the ground and never officiated again.

This guy is regularly brought up as an RL legend

Shameful

Did he give any reasoning for his stance? That a woman wasn't able to apply the laws or control the team - I mean it would be nonsense but I am just interested if he had any justification for it or was he simply suggesting it 'wasn't right'.

If memory serves he just said “no, I’m not having it, I’m not having a bird reffing”

Thanks.

It is sure is a depressing and infuriating story.

Infuriating because of his ridiculous beliefs and doubly so because he felt he could say "I’m sure you understand” to her.  Makes your blood boil.

And depressing because a ref was lost from the sport and maybe even a fan altogether (not sure if you know).

But I thank you for sharing the story because it shows the types attitudes that are still being fought simply for equality... who knows, maybe he has now seen plenty of women's Rugby and women ref's and changed his mind.  I hope so.  But as we can see from social media, there is a long way to go.

there was an old guy who used to come in a local pub back in the late 80s who would only let a bloke pull his pint - in his own glass of course! can still hear him say "am not letting a bird pull me pint"

to be honest would rather see the back of any pundit who cant say "think" properly with a th instead of an f - fink- drives me nuts
