Leah Burke was outstanding in the World Cup and before her ACL injury, it’s so good to see her back playing well.

Featherstone 10 Huddersfield 30.

Enjoyable game. Credit to both teams. Shows what the bottom half of WSL can provide when opponents are reasonably well-matched.

Half-time 0-22 was rough on Rovers. Got it back to 10-22, then Huddersfield scored twice while Rovers left-winger was in the bin for a hair-pull. Seemed harsh. Just a brief grab by a defender in the wrestle. Penalty would have sufficed.

Special word for the aforementioned Rovers left-winger. Must be about 5 foot. Stood up to a lot of pressure, particularly under the high ball.

Ref should look at his understanding of ball-stealing and benefit of the doubt. Some calls were random at best. It is not illegal to have a hand on the ball. There has to be a clear stripping action.

Very keen to hear any opinions!

If putting together a new team, I would still have Jodie top of the wanted list.

Georgia can lose her way under adversity. Exemplified by the England defeat in Port Moresby, along with a few pivotal games at Cas. Those were a while back, and she was very young to take on that level of responsibility, but I wonder if all that much has changed. Don't share the writer's opinion of her performance v NZ. Last year's Knights season laid down a useful marker. Needs an enhanced role, and to emerge from the shadow of Jesse Southwell, to warrant number 1 status.

Struck me during the Leeds/Wigan CC semi that Keara Bennett might be the most technically and tactically proficient player in WSL. Compares well with the two starting 9s in Origin.

A couple of dodgy calls helped the giants imo when it got back to 22-10 and I think from memory Fev even got across the line twice but were held up.Big positive for the Giants was the debut of Mollie Iceton, only 17yo I believe but looks a good athlete who could develop into anything.

First time Barrow have been smashed and it was against a weakened Leeds team.

Hope Lucy Murray who went off before halftime is ok for next week.

I couldn't see too many omissions. Might have 4/5 players out through injury at other times in a season.

Far cry from the virtual reserve-grade teams fielded in the old Premiership a week before the men's CC final.

AFAIK, Giants under-19s have won 2 from 3 this year. And the defeat v York wasn't by a huge margin. Bodes well, if they can keep hold of the more talented ones.

Ive watched all their games, Molly Iceton is quality like BroncoFan says, she has a lot of qualities where if she kicks on she could be a very, very good winger. Other than that I don't see maybe more than 1 or 2 who could be at best fringe SL players for the Giants. York are pretty much the same, they have really struggled with recruitment just because they are such a travel distance away from the main areas of the junior community game. Those two are basically living off scraps that don't get picked up by Leeds and Fev are even further behind mainly getting those that don't get in at Hudds or York.

On the plus side with so many junior teams now there is obviously a limit on players that teams can sign so we could see a leveling up of the competition in the next 2 or 3 years.

No Humberside representation in WSL is a major loss for the game.

HKR junior teams appear strong in several grades. As these feed through, Rovers should have enough talent to really kick on. Need something in place to prevent any more like Jess Sharp going to York.

Agree, York have loads of Hull FC players in their under 19’s.

One of them is a name to follow, Evie Sexton I think not even 17 yet but looks a good athletic centre/backrower.

Yeah its even harder for Hull KR and Hull to get that junior talent as they really only have the Hull area to pick from and not too many junior teams around there especially when compared to anyone around the West Yorkshire area.

Im not sure how Hull KR kick on from been on the fringes to taking that next step when their best talent might still be enticed to a SL club while KR are still in the Championship. It must be even harder for Hull who are already behind Hull KR and although they were unlucky in the restructure, they already have losses under their belts to the top 2 teams in League 1 and it will be a tough ask in the playoffs for them to travel to either of those teams and pick up wins to give them a shot at promotion through the playoffs.

Here’s a review of Featherstone v Huddersfield with a particular focus on the Giants’ exciting backline. https://womensrl.com/?p=187

The review highlights Molly Iceton's long break early in the game. Took the Fev defence on round the outside off a kick return.

Perfectly illustrates the inanity of RL fans mithering about surrender/voluntary tackles. Without recourse to the floor if they run out of space, wingers will habitually come inside and take the tackle. Thereby narrowing the width of the pitch de facto.

Rules and applications should encourage players to back themselves and make the most of their ability. If a young winger turns the ball over on tackle 1, after being held up and dragged over the side-line, won't be long before she (and her coach) decide that safety-first is the best option for the team.

The Northern Union was not formed simply to compensate players. I think some of us are drawn to the women's game because more often the style of play seems to capture the true historic spirit of RL. The men's game has lost its way if complete your sets/get to your kick/build pressure is the way to win. Further strengthens the case for bespoke rules in WSL and NRLW.
