Leeds Wire replied to Bedford Roughyed's topic in Any Other Business / Any Other Sports
I remember the first time I watched 'No Surrender' (another Bleasdale classic) and Bernard played the part of a bouncer. He repeatedly insisted that the intonation on his name was 'Ber-NARD' because he'd been in the French Foreign Legion. When someone pleaded with him "You shouldn't judge a book by its cover", the deadpan, innocent delivery from Bernard was "I do, I can't read". Incidentally, Bernard was also a regular at the quiz in the Cat and Lion in Stretton, Warrington and always had time for people. He must have been sick of people saying "gizzajob" but you wouldn't know it. RIP Ber-NARD, you legend. -
If you told me, even 2 years ago, that Leigh would be getting over 8K for a regular league fixture against Cas I'd have laughed you out of town. Well done Leigh

Off to see this whirlwind of a band on Thursday at Leeds Brudenell. I unexpectedly have a spare (free to you) ticket if anyone wants it. The support act is a young Manchester lad with a huge future -

This lot have got a new album coming out and are touring the UK in October (got tickets for Leeds). They have gained a fabulous reputation as a live band. -

I remember Wire drawing Chorley away in the Challenge Cup. Doug was MP for Warrington North and his son was MP for Chorley. They innocently wandered around the perimeter of the pitch at half time and got an impromptu standing ovation on all 4 sides of the ground. It was absolutely lovely to see. I really hope there's some footage of it somewhere.
