Futtocks
Morrison's sell a brand of flatbread called "The Clay Oven Bakery", and they are better than the other supermarket attempts I've tried. While they don't do a Peshwari naan, they do some other of the usual variations. I don't know if other supermarkets sell them, but I haven't seen them in Sainsbury's or the Co-op. Worth looking for. I had their plain naan this evening, with an ox heart Goan-style curry. Damn good, and I made enough for re-heated seconds (which always taste better with curries, stews, etc.) tomorrow or Tuesday. Bleep1673
One of the great things about being in a relationship with someone from another country is being able to partake in their food & drink. My (ex) Partner is Jamaican, and last weekend she asked me if I liked "Sorrel", and I said "Of Course", she brought me out this 2 litre bottle of pink juice, which I thought to be about as exciting as she is now, non-alcoholic & about as prohibitionist as our government is. Then I tasted it. Wow, that was made by her Jamaican Mother using Wray & Nephews 63% rum & all the other stuff, I have 2 litres of rocket fuel, this is amazing. Enid, you did yourself proud. Futtocks
Just found a new takeaway menu shoved into my letterbox. It seems like someone on the staff has decided to give all the dishes "wacky" names. Possibly even "zany". Here are a few (their spelling and punctuation used throughout): Poultry in motion (chicken biryani) Mary had a sheek kebab (sheek kebab) Beta than feta (saag paneer) Give it a cry (lamb karahi) Oh my gosht (lamb bhuna) Comin righta-way (raita) Pillow rice (pilau rice) Funjabi samosa (Punjabi samosa) Raise the baa (lamb saag) Then the chicken dishes section is titled "Are you clucking for more" Let me never fall into the vulgar mistake of dreaming that I am persecuted whenever I am contradicted. I went for the cash option, and will therefore be making lobster and crayfish rolls tonight, with a bottle of decent chardonnay as part of the treat. We all just spent an afternoon on Zoom together, with a quiz and a cocktail-making lesson presented by a couple of colleagues. Zoom allows you to randomly split up a large number of participants into smaller chat spaces, so we did three 30-minute sessions of that too, chatting amongst 5-6 people each time. Some of them I hadn't spoken to since March, and some new recruits I've never met in person (two of the latter ended up on my quiz team too). Good fun, and while nobody was required to take part, most did. Let me never fall into the vulgar mistake of dreaming that I am persecuted whenever I am contradicted. Bleep1673
I was watching some scaremongering programme last night on C5, that was telling us that all food contains dangerous bacteria, and we shouldn't eat anything at all. But then they were talking about food wastage, and said even a couple of days beyond the Sell by/ Best Before/Use by dates are ok, as long as we cook them thoroughly. They also mentioned the top 10 UK Supermarkets agree, I then sat and tried to think of 10 Supermarkets, I managed 7, then went online to search the top 10, and was amazed. I had forgotten 2 of the shops I had been into that afternoon. Search top 10 & You.gov give you 30! Can you name 15?

Kwik-Save not on list I was surprised to see Netto on the list, as well as Londis & Best-One, I had been shopping in Spar and Iceland yesterday, they were the ones that I had missed, I would count Spar, Best-One & Londis as more convenience stores (ie, Corner shops) than Supermarkets Edited December 19, 2020 by Bleep1673

My 2nd favourite hospital (of 118) that I worked in was Mount Vernon in Northwood, Middlesex, and the only supermarkets were a Waitrose (V. Expensive), or Somerfield (V. Crowded & Cheaper) When I worked in Hull at the HRI, I mistakenly did a shop at Netto. Food was awful.
Futtocks
I didn't realise Netto and Nisa were still going. If they're not in your neighbourhood, they don't stick in the memory, I suppose. Wavy Line is long gone, though. My other local supermarket is Wing Yip, which is great, but too niche to get on the list. If you leave Cromwell Square, Brighton, and head west towards Hove, there is an almighty trans-Asian food store, and when I say TRANS-Asian, I mean every Asian food you can think of, it is half the size of a Rugby pitch, and has foods, and spices from countries you had forgotten about. Wing Yip are amateurs compared to this. In Hastings the best two shops for Asian food are one on Queens Road, and another run by a Sri Lankan lady on Malvern Way, in the Londis. I even found an Eastern Russian cookbook in a small book shop in St. Leonards, that is in Russian for £5. It looks tempting, not sure of the translations though.
