Griff9of13
Doncaster Airport is a very long runway. It's currently underused, and very adjacent to the East Coast Main Line. Passengers could be in London in just over an hour. As a hub it doesn't really matter where it is does it? Other than the ridiculous notion that it MUST be inside the M25 even though there are 10x as many people living outside London as live in London. "it is a well known fact that those people who most want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it."
fatboystu
Working in the air freight industry I've heard of quite a few people say Manchester should be improved/expanded. Some of the airline services offered out of Heathrow are just to slow and the airlines can't do enough to accommodate customers moving freight out of Manchester. Why is it that everything in this country need to be in or near London. It's the capital, so what. Keeping things in London inflates prices just because its London! There's more to this country than bloody London.
JohnM
Other than the ridiculous notion that it MUST be inside the M25 even though there are 10x as many people living outside London as live in London. ..and those people seem to be using Schipol more and more as their hub. LHR isn't for the likes of us, though. Not really. I expct that someone will be able to post stats on current useage: where journey start and finish, hub stats, freight stats etc.
The Future is League
I wonder if Boris still wants to build a airport in the Thames estuary after this latest report. http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/6836423/Pictured-The-1400-tonne-timebomb-that-could-blow-up-Kent.html
DoubleD
I wonder if Boris still wants to build a airport in the Thames estuary after this latest report. http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/6836423/Pictured-The-1400-tonne-timebomb-that-could-blow-up-Kent.html It was always a non-starter, a ridiculous idea that no one in the industry supports. The economic and environmental costs make it completely unviable. If the UK wants to keep a hub airport, Heathrow is the only option. The others don't have anything like the infrastructure to support the millions of passengers. Heathrow is like a city in itself, that's how vast it is. New aircraft like the Dreamliner, A350 etc are much quieter and more environmentally friendly than old 747s so noise levels are less of an issue as aircraft are replaced. There is another proposal gaining momentum in the industry, which hasn't gained much media coverage but respected former pilot and industry expert Jock Lowe has proposed extending the northern runway to allow for increased take offs and landings, negating the requirement for an additional runway, so saving face for Cameron whilst also costing significantly less. It wouldn't surprise if this got the go ahead

The point of my argument was that man who will probably run for the leader of the Tory party after the next general election thought that putting an import next to a ticking time bomb was a viable option to Heathrow expansion. I suppose this confirms peoples general opinions of politicians and how out of touch with reality politicians are.
Wiltshire Rhino
Lots more noise to stop southerners getting to sleep on a night. You live closer to Heathrow than some southerners 2014 Challenged Cup Winner
Wolford6
You live closer to Heathrow than some southerners Well, in that case, I can confirm that noise is not a problem. Under Scrutiny by the Right-On Thought Police
Wiltshire Rhino
Well, in that case, I can confirm that noise is not a problem. I, too, can confirm that noise is not an issue and I live a mere 70 miles from Heathrow. 2014 Challenged Cup Winner
