V’landys aiming for a 19 round season (currently 27)

This is an interesting development.

V’landys indicated that the NRL’s move to an expanded 20-team competition in the next few years is set to translate into a shorter club season.

This would mean a greater emphasis on State of Origin, perhaps a mid-season standalone window, and international football while also reducing the workload on players.

“If you don’t have ambition, you shouldn’t be there. Our ambition is to make the competition as fair as possible. The draw would be fantastic if everyone played once, so you need 20 teams for that,” he said.

“Talking about conferences and all those sorts of things is part of the process that we’re going to go through with the business case.

“They are going to be playing less football because at the moment there are 27 rounds. If you go to 19 rounds you’ve got all those weeks we can do other things and that’s where you can fix your problem with the State of Origin.”

Sounds like common sense . I’ve watched NRL for ages but the draw continually baffles me . Teams can play once in 18 month then play another team twice in a month

The go is a 24 team in a 2 division comp with promotion and relegation where every team plays each other within their division twice. Then that is followed by a 5 team finals series in each division. State of origin 3 game series at the end of the grand finals, then that is followed by international rugby league.

They wont push origin to end of season…tried it once. For players not involved in play offs they will not have played in a month.

If they go to two divisions crowds will suffer. They need to learn from UK.

Fans wont put up with paying to watch only second level opposition. Money and best players will flow to the top 12.

They tried it once, it will take a few seasons for it to catch on, once it is realised that it is not going to be played in the middle of the season the viewers will come. As for players that have not played for a month. They can start a training camp for them to stay fit. After all State Of Origin coaches are not coaching NRL clubs.

Sorry @R L Winger, I have to agree with @Anita Bath, I don’t see a post season Origin working, in the same way post season international rep footy isn’t working. It’s post season.

More and more, I can’t see international footy outside WC’s and maybe a six nations every other four years working anywhere but mid season. The same place where Origin is destined to stay.

The Western Bears' bids to become the 18th NRL franchise were handed a huge blow on Tuesday.

Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) boss, Peter V'landys, has informed the Western Australian government that bids from a consortium made up of Perth and North Sydney backers had been rejected, according to reports from The Daily Telegraph.

V'landys confirmed on Tuesday that a bid tabled by the consortium of investors had failed to meet the financial requirements to successfully found the team, with V'landys stating that their bid had come up 'too short'.

The Bears’ submission failed to include the offer to the NRL of a licence fee – a sugar hit which could help the NRL placate the clubs – prompting V’landys to declare the business case didn’t stack up. The bid instead combines Perth corporate and government support and the knowhow and infrastructure of the North Sydney club (which still plays in the second-division NSW Cup).

Interesting report in the Grauniad:

An idiot Australian federal  Labor government headed up by Elmer Thud is going to throw 600 million ill affordable Australian dollars at a doomed project in Papua New Guinea that will be lucky to last 10 years. If Mr Potato Heads Liberal party get into government next year hopefully they pull the pin on it.
