roughyed34
As an aside had a great chat with one of the linesmen today. What he said would change anyone's opinion of the officials. What a gentleman Mr Woodman was. Certainly opened my eyes in a full and frank discussion about rules etc as well as him pointing out they are fans of the game like us.He was incredibly honest about doing the job. It was a pleasure to speak to him, and massive credit to the lad for speaking so openly about officiating matches and taking the time to talk to us. We could do with the RFL allowing people like him to speak out. Refreshing to hear the officials point of view, and seriously I have far more tolerance for the men who officiate after hearing his side of the story. Fair play to the man.? Agreed,we could do with a little more contact with the officials. They never say anything, surely they have a view themselves. They must the skin of a rhinoceros with the grief they get from us lot. After all without them there wouldn't be a game,i think sometimes we need to remember this.As 34 says"fair play to the bloke". Maybe we do need a little more tolerance of officials in future.
neversaydie
Agree with the previous comments regarding officials. Rhino skins especially when spectators are only a few feet away. There is one thing missing from officials imho, clear signals when an offence is committed, so many times we seem at a loss deciding which offence the ref. has called. There are signals available, but refs. tend to give a half indication of an offence. Clearer signals would avoid frustration, both from players and spectators. As far as attendances are concerned, it is frustrating seeing a great game (at this level) of rugby, and know that some stay aways, are missing out. Sadly there has to be a compelling reason on a bank hol. weekend, with all the other options available, for some fans to turn up. Marketing, with a fun day, including things for families to enjoy, before the match might be a help, but this of course would involve a lot of preparation and promoting, something we don’t seem to do. Perhaps because there is not enough willing hands to help out and of course no money in the pot.
Pigeon Lofter
Some laws are completely ignored by players and officials alike, which brings the concept of having them in the first place brought into question. Being a match official must be a nightmare! The scrum should be fed by the SH holding the pointed ends of the ball in each hand and sending it on its way along the ground...not just holding it in the palm of one hand round the middle and rolling it through the assembled structure like a bowling ball. Lazy and illegal but the referees don't care. Same for play-the-balls.....how many times is it projected back by the foot or heel? Again, the referees let it happen at all levels to keep the game moving. It doesn't have to be like this....I watched a couple of Serbian matches on YouTube....all the PTBs are correctly enacted. It works if the officials insist on it,the players then must do it and everyone is happy. In themselves, not a big deal but if referees ignore these then why not ignore minor offsides, holding down delaying tactics or even obstructions (which they often do)? Random enforcement ruins the game for players and spectators but over-zealousness has the same effect too. If the game is semi-lawless,then referees have an almost impossible job every match.
