Hopefully they won’t change the eligibility rules for origin allowing both NSW and Queensland to select any useful players from New Caledonia and Vanuatu etc.

You’re not up to speed with Origin rules are you?

Result isn't a complete surprise.  Blackhawks are by far the strongest team in the region and were just too good at taking advantage of the errors Pacifique Treize made, especially in the first half.

Score at halftime was 20 - 0 to Townsville.  Still a positive learning experience for the team, with the squad also being rotated from Saturday's game.

Team heads to Innisfail on Friday to play the Northern Pride.

8-0 2nd half shows PT dug in.

They will not find it difficult to improve on their performances, as individuals and organisation after this.  I am hoping that big efforts are now put in, going forwards, and am really looking to see more in the press about PT.

Agree. The tour has been a great experience for everyone involved in Pacifique Treize to establish a baseline and understand what the structure of these squads should be in the future and what is required to compete against the Australian regions.

Everyone, from players to officials, have learnt a lot and focus will now move to implement some of these learnings in the lead in to next year's tour.

What do the players do in between tours from a playing perspective?

That's the key really isn't it? Without building to be about more than just the tour aspect any progress will be severely limited.

The players based in Noumea & Port Vila will continue to take part in the respective academies Pacifique Treize has in both cities.

The intention is for additional academies to be opened up in Santo and either Mont-Dore, Dumbea or Paita.

Players at the Academy take part in weekly training that is run by domestic representatives and then special intense sessions when we have specialists from Australia & France visit.

Those based in Vanuatu are able to take part in the domestic competitions run on the two core islands. New Caledonia doesn't have a domestic competition structure yet, so we will run inner & inter academy matches to help build match fitness, etc.

If everything goes to plan, there will be a Pacifique competition held towards the end of the year featuring teams representing Santo/Sanma, Efate/Shefa, Nouméa, Dumbea, Mont Dore and Paita to help pick the U17s & U19s Pacifique Treize teams for next year.

These teams will feature both Academy players & other athletes from across the countries.

We will see what happens with the structure of that tournament, things have changed since before the start of the tour.

Laurent Garnier: "Our young talents must confront what is the best in the world"

WRITTEN BY ARNAUD FABRE · FEBRUARY 19, 2024

Laurent Garnier tells us about the Pacific XIII U17 selection that made its first tour in Australia.

Hello Laurent, you were one of the coaches of the first official Pacific XIII team, first explain the project to us.

The stated goal of the Pacific XIII project (which was born in 2019 now) is to form a Francophone team in the Queensland NRL Reserve Championship in Australia in a few years. To do this, we believe that our young talents must confront each other as regularly as possible with the best in the world in terms of the development of young treizists. It is only at this price that some of them will achieve professionalism in a sustainable way and that then we will be able to dream again of high-level players able to compete with the best in the world! Many have already understood this.

What is your exact role for this project?

As in any new projects, we must be multi-tasking at the beginning, you can imagine! I was the youth recruiter for the Metropolis and head-coach for this 2024 tour.

You just toured Australia with three games, how did the tour go?

We can really be satisfied with this first exit of Pacific XIII! Bringing together young Francophones, from metropolitan France, New Caledonia, Wallis, as well as Ni-Vanuatus without forgetting Australians of French origin and composing a team in two weeks, likely to face the best U17 in northern Queensland, the bet could seem crazy. But we got there thanks to the efforts and passion of all those working on the project. We must also talk about the support of the families of all these young people, who played a decisive role in the development of this first edition.

Within the selection, there were players from the metropolis and the French islands, how did you make the selection?

I took care of the metropolitan young people from the clubs of Albi, Lézignan, Limoux and Toulouse who all released their players. Manuel Jalabert and Didier Heysen took care of the recruitment in the Pacific.

What was the program of your tour?

It was for these players to get to know each other first. For 70% of the squad, they had never officially played Rugby XIII. Five training sessions, followed on Thursday evening by an opposition match against a Townsville college team and on Saturday, we played our first official match in Mackay. It should be remembered that we benefited on site from the support of the French and Kanackas communities as well as the facilities of the North Queensland Cowboys real institution in Townsville. All this in the end allowed the first young people of Pacific XIII to discover other cultures and to discover a little the world of Australian Treizist professionalism.

What do you remember from these first three games?

For my part, we were able to realize the difference in rhythm and physical preparation of the southern hemisphere. These squads we played are selections of the NRL reserve clubs (those of the Souths Sydney Rabbitohs and the Cowboys) who were preparing their Queensland U17 championship, the Cyril O'Connell Cup.

The first match against the Mackay Cutters was the most within our reach. We even led 10 to 0 after 15′ of play, and finally lost only 2 points for lack of experience at this level.

Followed the most physical match against the Blackhawks where the learning group discovered the virtues of defense for 80% of the match against super-powerful forwards. But far from giving up, the team continued its 3rd game in six days against the Pride of Cairns.

All players are really to be congratulated during this tour, because the weather conditions (heat waves) did not help our preparation. The most encouraging thing is to have seen the growing envy and senial of these young players during our games.

What are the next deadlines for Pacific XIII?

The 2025 tour is already in preparation of course. Probably with always U17s, because we still have a lot of players in this category that we would like to see in the Australian test. The goal is also to share with the greatest number of players from the Pacific and also from metropolitan France the experience of youth championships in Australia. Already a lot of players have contacted us to come and evolve Down Under this season on periods to be determined.
