OK, here goes. Over the next few weeks we, the TRL elite, will decide which country makes the best beer.

This can be interpreted any way you wish - by best overall, by quantity of fine ales, lagers etc., by which produces the single best beer. Your choice. Choose more than 1 if you like.

We'll start with qualifying. 26 countries, in 4 pools, best 8 in the voting by 12 o'clock midday on Sunday 12th July 2020 will make the knockout phase. There will be 5 European Qualifiers, 2 from Asia/Australasia and 1 from The Americas.

Second poll is for the Americas - scroll down for other pools to vote on.

Off you go. And remember, vote responsibly.

I haven't had beers from all these countries, but once you get past the megacorporations' swill, the USA has really upped their game with beer over the last couple of decades.

The craft beer wave originated in the United States and they have undoubtedly produced the most innovative beer in the last couple of decades. Much of it, however, I do not find to my taste and their main brands remain ghastly.

I used to quite like a dark lager Dos Equis from Mexico but it has been quite some time since I last saw it.

I recall reading that Brazil is in terms of quantity one of the top producers of beer in the world but could not name a single brand

Brazil is the 3rd largest beer market in the world. It was started by German incomers but now it is all homogenised lager - Inbev own 70% of the market, Heineken another 10%. Skol and Brahma are the 2 biggest brands. (Most of that from Wiki)

For people who like cold beer, rather than cool, craft beer is great. The coldness means that there is no place for subtle flavours, you need a strong whack. Belgian or British ales are wasted at that temperature, but craft beers do well. It is perfect for former lager drinkers.
