Van Gerwen going home is very disappointing but he hasn't quite been good enough this year to devalue an overall tournament, like if say Price was ruled out.

If you add in a Clayton, Wright or a Smith then it's a different matter.

Yes I agree - hopefully we get some more great games before the tournament ends too.

the game that was just on- souter? the portugese guy v the scottish guy was truly awful - i doubt either of them would have won a set v MVG

The Portuguese player Jose de Sousa beat Michael Van Gerwen in the final of The Players Championship in June of this year.

He’s more than capable of beating MVG in the World Championship.

He was poor this afternoon though in a low quality match.

Tbf it was only Souter's poor doubles that meant De Sousa was even still in it.

Yes, he was very poor today, but he’s still more than capable of competing with MVG looking at this year's form guide.

I like both of them. Clayton seems like a nice guy and I like how Smith plays.

I reckon Aspinall could be in trouble now. Not had a great year and a dodgy arm.

Destroyed by Rydz in a very impressive display as you suggested could happen.

It feels like we are past the point of no return. Whilst we would all prefer to see every game take place, the logistics of a cancellation at this stage are huge (although this is only part of the consideration). Carry on, I say.

Anderson v White was not a good game. Poor quality, but Anderson just about deserved to go through - more so because White couldn't finish the game out earlier.

Anderson will need to improve considerably to go any further.

Great comeback from 3-0 down in sets.

Smith beats Clayton in an epic tie-break.

Looking at the draw, you'd think the overall winner may well come from the Smith/Price 1/4 final.

That match was something special, so many dramatic legs.

Well done to Smith, could end up being his year if he plays like that.

In a way you'd think that, then sky shows who's on tomorrow, Cross, Wright, Wade, Anderson. Ryds on fire.

Played in a great spirit too.

It struck me that this was one of the most sporting contests I had seen in some time. Both players fully invested in their own performances, but recognising where their opponent turned the screw a little bit further. Excellent to see.

Certainly some names there. Do they have the form? We will see!

One of the odd things about darts is the way that it's treated by the media in different countries.

For instance, darts is probably biggest in the UK but is largely ignored by the news media despite being more watched than other more prominent sports. The only articles on BBC have been about the effect of covid. I'm not sure if this is because it's seen as a pub game rather than a serious sport. The Netherlands is similar but does cover it as a sport at least.

In contrast, if you pop over to RTE, whenever an Irishman was playing it was the top sports story. This is similar in somewhere like Germany. In a paper like Die Bild, it is treated as a major event and when Hempel was playing was the top sports story.

In contrast again, today we saw an unseeded Australian come within a hairs breadth of making a shock trip to the quarters. Not only is it not mentioned in national sports sites, but not even in his local Queensland paper.

How odd.

Johnny Ferrett and Bully Boy Smith was an all time epic . I was pleased for Smith, I hope he goes on playing to that standard . If he wins he’ll be doing it the hard way . I’m an Anderson fan personally but his form isn’t anything like peak Flying  Scotsman , although he usually finds a way at Ally Pally . If not him then I’d love Merv the King King to do it . I do like Merv and all his facial gestures . A word for Callan The Riot Rydz . He might have the worst haircut but he’s playing some of the best darts.
