Anita Bath Posted March 23, 2022 Author Posted March 23, 2022 25 March 1922 challenge cup QF at Athletic grounds Hornets 5 small club from t’other side of Royton 2 crowd 26,664, still the highest crowd to watch a Hornets home game, producing receipts of £1823 and 2000 more than Rochdale FCs record attendance. (41,831 attended the 1924 Challenge Cup final played at Athletic Grounds) Scrum half Ernie Jones kicked what was described as one of the finest goals kicked on the ground in the first half. “from a position at least five yards inside Hornets half, Jones kicked a magnificent goal”. Jones wasn’t the regular goalkicker for Hornets but potted the occasional 2 pointer. Winger Joe Corsi scored the lone try. Jones joined Hornets from Bridgewater RU as a 19 year old in 1910. He toured Australia with England in 1920. He died 50 years ago. In the semi final Hornets were drawn to play Widnes at Weaste. This was the third time in 12 seasons Hornets reached the semi final having lost to Broughton Rangers in 1911 and to Saints in a replay in 1915. In the 100 years since 1922 they have only returned to the semi final on three occasions, the most recent being 64 years ago.

Anita Bath Posted April 28, 2022 Author Posted April 28, 2022 29th April 1922 Headingley Leeds Northern Union Cup Final Rochdale Hornets 10 Hull 9 The pies were hot, the beer was cold and a great time was had by all (even those on the delayed train from Rochdale - they got in for free). As rank outsiders we shocked the rugby League world. One year previously almost to the day we had lost to Hull 79-2 - the clubs biggest defeat until Castleford scoring a ton against us in 2007. Not sure anyone gives a damn - nothing on Twitter or Facebook or fishul website and no hornets fans have replied to posts on this thread. (Come on Hornet - tell us how proud you are of this achievement) Its a damn shame if this monumental moment in the clubs history (and towns history) is to pass by unmarked. There are people in this town who are descendants of some of the players - surely we could try to reconnect with them at a future home game - capacity permitting. My glass is full and I am toasting each and every one of the players - they set a high standard for those that follow/followed. In the words of Tina Turner they were "simply the best"

Excolt 1 Posted April 29, 2022 Posted April 29, 2022 I remember Graham Starkey giving me a copy of the match report. I think it moved to Wembley just a few years later. Hornets finest moment. I will probably never see it matched but I’ll settle for winning this seasons very competitive League One.

The Hornet Posted April 30, 2022 Posted April 30, 2022 HORNETS CELEBRATE 100 YEARS SINCE A FAMOUS CHALLENGE CUP VICTORY April 29th 2022 marked the centenary of Rochdale Hornets' finest moment: the day we won the Challenge Cup. The final was played at Headlingley, Leeds, where - in front of a then record Cup Final crowd of 35,000 - Hornets took on a Hull FC team packed with internationals, including the world famous Great Britain centre Billy Batten. There was much talk of an 'exodus' from Rochdale to see Hornets play in the final, with Hornets selling out their entire allocation of stand tickets. On the Wednesday before the game, The Rochdale Times printed vital details for fans planning to make the trip to Leeds "The Railway Company are running three long special trains leaving at a few minutes to eleven, a few minutes to twelve and one o'clock. The Hornets players will travel on the the 12.46 ordinary train, reaching Leeds at 1.48 and they will proceed direct to the ground." Ahead of the game, there was a general assumption that Hornets were the inferior side and all Hull had to do to win was turn up. Even the official programme notes said: "The Hull side are reported to be in splendid condition and are popular favourites. Hornets' backs are generally supposed to be much weaker than the men from Hull." The Hornets team on the day was: Frank Prescott, Joe Corsi, Teddy McLaughlin (sp), Fred Wild, Tommy Fitton, J. Kynan, J. Heaton, Tommy Woods, Jack Bennett, Thomas Harris, Dai Edwards, Dicky Paddon and Louis Corsi. They had other ideas. In the opening exchanges, Hornets' pack dominated; Hull relying on the defensive efforts of Batten to keep his side in the game. Against the run of play, Hull were first to score when winger Kennedy charged down a clearing kick from Heaton after just 8 minutes. Hornets then piled on the pressure: two Dicky Paddon penalties edged them ahead before Tommy Fitton bored his way through for a try in the corner. Just before Half time, Batten broke clear - leaping over Hornets' fullback Prescott to score. The conversion missed. Hornets held a slim half-time lead of 7-6. After the break, the game became a tense affair as play went from end to end. Heaton and Wild combined to send in Tommy Fitton for a second Hornets try. The spectators who were stood right up to the touchline had to be moved back so that Dicky Paddon could take the conversion attempt. He missed: 10-6. In the dying minutes, Hull second rower Taylor crashed in for a try to make it 10-9. One report of the game says: "As Stone took the kick, the crowd breathed in. The international winger was wide and Rochdale had won the cup." Mrs Fillan - wife of the Northern Union Chairman - presented the trophy to Hornets captain Jack Bennett: the first - and as yet only - Hornets captain to lift the game's most prestigious piece of silverware. On their return to Rochdale on Saturday evening, the players were met at the railway station by a crowd reported as numbering 'several thousand'. When Bennett emerged carrying the trophy a great roar of welcome went up. Cheer after cheer was raised as the players and officials boarded a couple of charabancs and drove through the crowded streets to the Town Hall for a civic reception. Hornets arrived at the Town Hall Square to find a crowd of 40,000 people waiting. The Rochdale Times said “… it was only with difficulty that the players could make their way into the building, owing to the enthusiasm of their supporters." Indeed, it was a historic day for other reasons: it was the last Challenge Cup Final to be played under the Northern Union banner, before the governing body changed its name to the Rugby Football League - thus creating ‘Rugby League’. It also drew the largest crowd that had ever gathered to witness a Northern Union game in this country. The following season, Hornets began their defence of the Challenge Cup with a first round home tie against Huddersfield. They lost 3-5. A repeat of cup glory would have to wait. Hornets travel to Cornwall RLFC, this bank holiday weekend, who embark on their maiden season - creating their own history. Sunday's game is free to view on Our League - sign up here.
The Hornet Posted April 30, 2022 Posted April 30, 2022 Seems the board and management team was thinking about the 100 year anniversary long before you was Anita. A fantastic tribute to the achievement by way of this seasons playing shirt and anniversary mug’s will soon be available online and via the club shop. Well done Rochdale Hornets

Its clearly someone with a grudge or agenda against the clubs chairman / board which when you consider how fortunate we are these guys took a punt on us when they did two years ago and the progress being made is either plain stupidity or worse intentional mischief making. Bruce Almighty Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 It's obvious the club was caught on the hop with the anniversary as the original social media post from the current chair appeared to be a cut and paste from the authors of the History of Hornets book, (on a different topic for some reason you can't apparently buy the book from the club?) Accompanying the cut and paste post was a frankly amateurish clip art picture which unsurprisingly came in for a bit of ridicule. Later that day an slightly improved clip art picture arrived and then finally in the evening a respectable photoshopped picture arrived along with a story credited to Jim Stringer, which I believe the club only requested that afternoon? There was also the announcement of commerative mugs to mark the event. Surely these would and should have been available on the day if the club was up to speed and aware of the significance of the anniversary? Perhaps the issue as someone pointed out at the game yesterday that non of the current board or staff are from Rochdale and therefore don't have a full handle on the history of Hornets. This is a relatively easy fix. For me though, the huge elephant in the room is the complete news blackout around the situation of what is going on about the stadium? Why are we now still months on no wiser as to what is going on? What has caused this situation? Is the Fiji match going ahead? Inform people and we will I am sure be 100% behind you.
