Double Headers - Women's game

Recommended Posts

I went to a double header at Headingley last month and the South Stand was pretty much full about an hour before kick off for the mens game. There’s no way Leeds women would have got that many for a standalone event against Huddersfield.

I’m not sure we should dump double headers at this stage of development. They provide more VFM for spectators - possibly adding more to the gate of a different, younger demographic - and boost food & drink revenue for clubs.

I don't see the fascination with thinking the women's game is all about adding to the mens game. I don't see giving fans VFM as a compelling argument to keep them either. Giving something away for free is a pretty poor reason and is so Rugby League. This is particularly so when the vast majority aren't interested and/or don't want to be stuck in a ground for 4+ hours.

The womens game should have its own promotion and development in it's own right. It should not be to make up for failings in the men's game or to give fans a freebie.

I agree based on where we are now. I can understand why we have done what we have so far, but we have no reason to adopt this approach in future.

The double header thing is a real challenge. The fan base of women's sport does tend to be a lot younger and newer, who aren't necessarily interested in 4 or 5 hours in a stadium (is anyone?), so the impact of the Women's game is lost.

I don't think our aim for the women's game should be gettibga decent crowd for the last 20 minutes of each game.

'Free' but not without (added) value. Sky are showing a double header at Saints on Thursday. They wouldn't show it as a standalone event  - yet.

But I agree that should be the aim. Of course it should.

What are they paying to show that game? Or is it more content the game is just giving away for free. I think we know the answer. There is nothing more small time than a sport wanting double headers as a sop to broadcasters. People were using the exact same arguments to justify the triple header semi final. Other sports don't do this but we just do this stuff for free.

The Giants womens team play in a seperate location, is run seperately to the club by a charity organisation and has only ever once played before the mens game and they get crowds on a par with most league 1 mens sides, the money made on these games goes straight back into the womens team/charity so is in no way leeching off the successful mens team like i believe a lot of the womens teams do.

That to me is how the womens game should be going forward, seperate entities in their own rights not just a curiosity freebie for those going to the mens game.

Plus the womens teams tend to get a different type of supporter to the mens game, we should be saying to people that if you want to watch the womens game then do it, as a seperate game, not just as something you might catch the last half hour of for free.

We need to start respecting the womens game more and letting them have their own crowds that want to be there rather than those who just find themselves watching it.
