Turns out GWS crowds are bigger in Sydney than Canberra.

Still 1,000's behind what GWS give out.

Some petrol stations even give you GWS free tickets when you buy a certain amount of petrol.

Anybody who buys a ticket for a GWS home game is a fool with so many freebies given out.

NRL clubs should try this trick. Some fans thought Tigers v Storm at Leichhardt looked a lot more than 10k. Ask for a steward's inquiry - abracadabra!, 15k official attendance.

I think the crowd numbers given out for GWS home  games includes all the freebies they give out.

A title on the ABC which I have been hearing for years, but with a warm ending which I expect will have lots of parallels to a wide range of grassroots sports clubs across the globe. Capture that spirit and your club should always succeed if the population is there to serve it.

Way things are shaping, Carlton might be the only big Melbourne club to make the 8.

I'm clearly wasting my time trying to make sense of the rules. However, FWIW there were a couple of ball-up calls in the last 2 mins of Essendon v Adelaide that blow apart your "prior opportunity" elucidations.

The latest fumbles and giggles show between Carlton and Port Adelaide featured one sublime moment when a short-range wobbly grubber effort hit the umpire on the goal-line.

The bloke reviewing the drama from the AFL equivalent of the bunker sounded like Kasey Badger. Upward inflection at the end of every sentence.

Carlton limped into 8th on the final regular-season ladder. Despite that, plus no Magpies, Bombers or Tigers, the top 8 appears to have worked out pretty well for the AFL and their first week of finals.

Would imagine SCG, Gabba, and Adelaide Oval will all be full. MCG won't be far off for Bulldogs v Hawks. This assumes I'm right with the venues.

Our resident expert has mentioned a "Big Four" of Melbourne AFL clubs. Presumably Collingwood, Carlton, Essendon, Richmond.

I had assumed a "Big Five" i.e. the above plus Hawthorn.

The 98k crowd for Bulldogs/Hawks suggests the latter term may be more appropriate. AFAIK Footscray don't have a massive fanbase. Possibly the attendance included a good number of neutrals whose teams didn't make the finals.

No Melbourne clubs left in the competition at all. Some might say that demonstrates a good national game.

Bombers are out, I don’t really care who wins. If I had a preference it would have been a Sydney v GWS GF. As a Sydney boy, I don’t mind seeing the Swans do well.
