The Jaime Chapman run down the right wing that broke the game open for the first try came off a scrum play deep in the NSW half.

Any chance the leadership might finally revisit the decision to do away with scrums after the ball goes into touch?

Why do the NRL not want to see more plays and sets like that? And why did the RFL slavishly copy such an obviously counterproductive rule change?

Compare the excitement of that set with the tedium of one that starts with a bash-and-crash hit-up off a midfield slow-motion PTB.

I agree with your sentiment but not necessarily the source of the problem.

The reason why the authorities were looking to remove the scrum in favour of the play the ball was because the teams wouldn't actually execute a scrum.

They wouldn't pack the scrum and the half wouldn't feed the ball and the ref kept shouting at them to get on with it.  Eventually a shot clock was brought in to force them to get on with the game.  And then most of the time, the ref called off the shot clock for some reason rather than actually punishing the team for getting the game restarted.  As fans, we were just watching 12 blokes stand around each other for half a minute at a time.

Yes, I hate the one up play from a play the ball... it would have been so much better if the teams formed a scrum and got on with the game and executed an attacking play.

The players are not in too great a hurry to get on with the PTB restart. Plus the ref is usually warning everyone to wait and hold while he sets the defence.

Brings home that the PTB is designed to follow a tackle. Take away the tackle and it makes no sense. Just a makeshift training drill.

I accept that.  My point was referring to how and why we got to the situation we are in now.

Record breaking attendance and TV ratings

https://www.nrl.com/news/2024/05/17/womens-origin-opener-breaks-rugby-league-records/amp/

Television numbers show the match to be the most-watched Women's State of Origin match on record, with Channel Nine's free-to-air viewership higher than free-to-air viewership for any NRL Telstra Premiership match this season and higher than free-to-air viewership for any AFL match played this year.

With a national total TV reach of close to 2 million and a total TV national audience of more than 940,000, ARLC Chairman Peter V'landys said the figures spoke to the strength of rugby league and the growth of the women's rugby league.

Ticketmaster has had "no availability" on Women's Origin 2 for a few days now.

NRL tickets are sometimes released closer to gameday. If that doesn't happen, must be sold out.

Not sure what capacity would be. Last year's Knights v Raiders semi got 29,548.

Tarryn Aiken took a long time to get going. Ali Brigginshaw might have run her race, at least at Origin level.

Tahnee Norris has gone back to the well for Origin 2. Ali moved to halfback with Sienna Lofipo at lock and Zahara Temara dropped.

Blues unchanged.

Will take a monumental effort from Maroons to level the series.

Qld didn’t solve one of their big problems and that is their bench, they lacked size and impact in game one.

They should’ve chosen Chelsea Lenarduzzi but instead have gone for really poor options.

Which was duly delivered, in true Queenslander fashion.

The clutch play, aside from the winning FG, was a short restart that found the side-line. Gave them the field position to hit straight back and level the scores. Without that gamble paying off, I reckon NSW would have closed the game out.

Kick-offs could be a noteworthy feature of the CC final. Will the BBC commentators be more clued-up than previously? Not holding my breath.

Crowd  25,872

A new record for Women's SOO and probably for Women's RL (not sure there)

In theory there were 67K at the Women's WC final in 2022 but I wouldn't count that.

That kick off was outstanding! Good point re the kick offs. Ruby Enright’s won them the semi against Wigan.
