Origin 2 2024 - Wednesday 26th June 2024

NSW deserved winners after their first half blitz.

For me Mitchell is still a grub.

Channel 9 commentary made that almost unwatchable at times. I was close to pining for Blocker's nonsensical interruptions.

I like old Blocker. Dan Ginnane my favourite commentator.

Quality tipping from me. Got to say Moses has been way better than I expected.

The Blues forwards dominated and gave their backs a great platform. Dearden and co  by contrast were under pressure every time they got the ball in that first one sided half.

Just been to my first ever origin game , I'm utterly gobsmacked at the lack of atmosphere; total silence throughout unless there was a break!

Fantastic result for New South Wales. Brilliant for State of Origin as well. I do agree though, I do not like Mitchell. In a game like rugby league individuals like him, should not be selected. Mundine, Mitchell and Pangai, were and are playing the wrong sport. Rugby Union would of been a better fit. They do give the sport a really negative view.

Also fantastic crowd attendance. It's actually wonderful to see. Hopefully one day the sport becomes national in Australia. 90,000 fans in the Victorian region.

Didn’t sound like that on the box.

Yes , I watched the game at the hotel and it was ok for atmosphere but believe me it was like the sound was on mute during most of the game whilst I was sat there

I'm not saying I disagree but which Ch 9 commentator(s) in particular?

I felt it was more about a bunch of mates having a chat about the game than a proper commentary. At no stage did they ever listen to what Ashley Clown was saying in order to understand his decisions and explain to the audience what was going on. The best example was over the sin bin decision, when Clown had clearly told both captains that the next time players ran in someone would go, but Fittler (or maybe Johns) just whined that Liam Martin was being binned for ruffling someone's hair.

It was amateurish, hugely biased, often incoherent and detracted from my enjoyment of the game. I should have muted it.

I can't disagree with any of that. Whilst commentators always have a responsibility to explain what's going on, on Origin nights, I suppose that responsibility is heightened due to the number of 'extra/casual' viewers.

Generally, it does feel like the commentary team are poorly directed/managed by their bosses.

In my opinion - the issues are exacerbated by the 'play-by-play' commentator, Mat Thompson, not being as proficient as his counterparts on Fox.

Regarding the 'colour commentators', Channel 9 tend to hire the 'big names' rather than the ex-pros-who-happen-to-be-able-to-commentate.

Yes, I find it staggering. When I first visited Suncorp many years ago, I couldn't believe how little atmosphere there was within the stadium (despite being surrounded by 40000 others).

By total coincidence, my seat was next to that of an (Aussie) ex-SL player (I won't say who but he used to play for Cas). I explained how amazed I was at the lack of atmosphere and he was happy to agree. (Maybe he just wanted me to shut up 😉)

People are telling me it was that it was because the game was in Victoria which makes no real sense as it seemed everyone had travelled from their state . The NRL will not generate an audience anywhere else with an atmosphere like that.

Those people are wrong 😉

Seriously though, I have attended countless matches on each side of the Pennines and plenty in Queensland, NSW and Victoria. This includes Grand Finals in each country and Origin games in QLD and NSW. I'll admit that I haven't attended an Origin game in Victoria.

The general atmosphere in England (pretty much any ground/stadium that I've attended) is 'way better' than any Aussie stadium that I have been to.

Aussie crowds do 'make noise' in very small bursts - around tries and other 'big moments'. However, during 'general play', I've experienced 80000 people watch a game 'in silence'.

From memory, the best atmosphere that I experienced in Australia was at the 2017 WC Final (despite the result being devastating). Suncorp wasn't full, that's a different story for another day, but the England fans in attendance ensured that the noise was raised relative to the usual 'library experience'.

Edit: I have a mate/acquaintance who attended the Melbourne game who's also originally from England. I'll message him and ask how he felt the atmosphere was compared to a) a typical game in QLD (where we both live) and b) a game in the UK.

I really miss the days of 10,000 brits travelling to Aus. Although I never wanted Origin to be seen as the pinnacle of our game the reality is it is seen as that by many ; now I'm 100% clear that the international game is the pinnacle and if we don't really prioritize that we are crazy ! But we all know as a game we are completely 🤪

I watch SOO from home and I never make any noise because I'm too tense (or depressed). As a NSWer, I was still tense right up to the 70th minute on Wendnesday night because I've seen it all before - the unassailable winnable position comes crashing down in the last 10 minutes. As a Wests Tigers fan it's the same. I'm still tense unless we're leading by 40 with 10 minutes left.
