I haven't looked at the NZ tournament, it may be more there due to more teams, but I think the point is clear - if you actually treat your potential markets seriously, you may actually deliver growth in them. Who cares what they do. They are a different market to ours that perhaps stay home on Saturday nights watching their rubbish on TV. Most Aussies get out and about on Saturday nights and are not at home watching TV. Maybe they are scared to take on Friday night football on TV on Friday nights so they take the soft option on Saturday nights to show their game. What are their TV ratings like? their crowd numbers are dropping significantly. Talent is secondary to whether players are confident.

They played other games on Friday nights, they just catered for the European audiences too, despite playing on that same round globe that apprently stops us catering for both markets.

Scubby Posted January 11, 2018 Posted January 11, 2018 This match was put together in such a half-arsed last minute way it was probably take it or leave it. The two competitions need a binding agreement, locking in participants to dates, times and schedules in 3-year blocks for the WCC or WCS (whatever happened to that) to ever gain momentum. Whether SL and NRL want to continue working hand to mouth on this is up to them. If they do, they are always going to fall short.

Allora Posted January 11, 2018 Posted January 11, 2018 How many English Fans will watch this game live if it was on at a better time besides the Leeds Fans? Less than 50k? Talent is secondary to whether players are confident.

BARB will have figures for the WCC between the Roosters and Wigan at the SFS. It was held around 10.30am Saturday time IIRC.

I used to like the WCC games but it has got less and less enjoyable over the years. It barely hits the Radar in Oz regardless of which team competes or wins. Allora Posted January 11, 2018 Posted January 11, 2018 The WWC has been an English promotional vehicle since it started. Its been the chance to knock off an Australian Clubs scalp and profess that Club to be the best in the World. The Fans and Clubs in Australia have not bought into this idea at all. It means far more to the SL Clubs and fans than it does to Aussies, all of the timing, locations and conditions are in the SL Clubs favour. I wonder why it has never really been embraced in Australia? Anyway, I hope its a great game and the best team wins on the day. Talent is secondary to whether players are confident.

It was the 2nd highest show on that channel, and the 10th highest viewed show on Sky Sports that week despite the breakfast slot.

I am not disagreeing with you entirely but 32k did show up in Sydney in 2014. That was for a club that has pretty atrocious attendances.

So the solution is to play it in a slot away from a market that is interested in it? Makes sense I suppose.

They only exceeded the 31.5k that the game vs Wigan got on one occasion, which was the Rd26 game vs Souths. I can't find any trace of viewing figures for that one tbh, I assume this game is on Fox over there rather than Nine?

The obvious answer to your original question Dave is that of course it should be played in a time that is optimal for both markets. End of thread. Unfortunately, some people will start an argument with a hairbrush and never back down despite have their assumptions and opinions melted by fact after fact. Unless the stadium wasnt available or some other admin issue, they could have played this saturday night. People watch sports on saturday, even the appallingly apathetic and arrogant Australian sporting public. RU gets this type of thing right all the time, RL more often than not gets it wrong. This will continue ad infinitum. I did love the revelation that RU was somehow involved in the flat earth society though... JoneslessBishop Posted January 11, 2018 Posted January 11, 2018 I’ll be sticking it on record is it will end up on the BARB figures. Given the unfortunate chain of events to get the game on, it was always hard to engage the neutrals. On the plus side, we should be able to get column inches, news segments on Fri and Sat showing highlights of international club games, throughout the day given the early start times, and a summary of performances in Sunday sport sections, so not all doom and gloom. There is no doubt that this year has been a bit of a low point for the WCC, after Leeds’ victory over Manly, Sky’s great documentary of Wigans trip down under and a reinvigorated WCS bringing Dacia sponsorship, Russel Crowe adding star appeal and last seasons SL wins, but with Wood and Draper gone and the SL clubs taking SL ownership, the future maybe looks brighter. Pearson and Lenagan showed great foresight in anticpitating Melbourne’s position and taking games down there, and Hetherington showed ambition in booking Elland Rd before bowing to the inevitable. They will be leading lights in the new SL board and that bodes better for the future.

SL is winning 13 - 11 at the moment. Other than a few results nearly all WCC have been very competitive and exciting games.
