audois
Elite 2 start-up this weekend and Pia Baroudeurs may well fancy their chances. Moniker change from last time in the top division as the Donkeys – Baroudeurs (‘the fighters’) now. Talisman Franck Rovira manges them and with centre Thomas Ambert back on home ground after his exploites at St Esteve winning the Elite 1 title in 2019 leading them. Re-furbished ground Stade Daniel Ambert would add too Elite1. Last weekend the first team squad were up in the mountains at Arles sur Tech (see below) preparing the opening clash today with Lescure from the Tarn. In the period just before the formation of the Dragons - Pia were one of the quartet from the Roussillon region prominant in Elite 1 along with XIII Catalans, St Esteve and St Cyprien. Now going forward it would offer three local clubs along with St,Esteve XIII Catalans (merged) and Palau. The latter were 4th tier when Pia were at their peak two decades ago. Olivier Elima doing a good job there at their base south of Perpignan. Interestingly Pia back then marketed themselves as Pia-Barcares-Salanque-Mediterranée XIII. Lots of clubs here do that. Joining another town and/or district to raise their profile. unapologetic pedant
When Palau started climbing the divisions I confused Palau-de-Cerdagne for Palau-del-Vidre. They`re not too far from each other. The former has a population of under 500. Even with a population of just over 3000, the latter is an unlikely venue for an elite 1 club. Jim from Oz
Footy starting again even though COVID still rampant???? Really?? I presume the players will all be in a bubble like the NRL?
barnyia
No just get a test if you've symptoms, the amateur union and football have been back playing for over a month. All elite 1 players work and even more so the elite 2 players, I don't think their employers would be happy if they where in a bubble. Even the super league players in the UK aren't really in a bubble and are seen in pubs and restaurants.
ATLANTISMAN
I used to love going to watch PIA they had some great coaches back between 1999/2005 (Abet/Jacques Jorda) sadly the Dragons just killed everything off would be great to have them back happy memories of TV matches there several times. Guy the old marie served a short term in jail for overfunding the club with public money (At one stage 3 aussie players were employed as road sweepers LOL:) not much road sweeping done. The result he got voted back in with an increased majority It was a sad day when the old club closed they had only the year or two before opened a new club house and gym just trying to remember who else coached them remember was it Craig Field (Ex Tigers sadly jailed for murder) and one Ex SOO player also played around 2003/4. Highlight used to be v St Esteve/X11 Catalan (UTC) the derby match on New Years day around 2004/5 drew 6/7000 to the USAP ground happy memories. Pia has a pop. 7000 'ish and why earlier they adopted the name different than today Salanque being the coastal area I think north from Perpignan up to Barcares. Her son Lucas plays at the Dragons. Andre Janzac former Federation man at CREPS in Toulouse coaching and formation. His son coached Limoux recently. audois
Hakim Miloudi has joined his younger brother Amine at Palau. Should be interesting. Maybe Hakim is wanting to get some valuable game time from November on before looking further a field. Anthony Mullally also from Toronto doing the same thing at Carcassonne. barnyia
It should be a great season this year in elite 1 with some close games if the imports can get over and the season actually starts, we're allowed to play but not allowed changing rooms or a refreshments bar or the clubhouse as from this weekend and toulouse, Montpellier and the other big city clubs have to be home and in bed for 9pm.
