NRL expansion (Merged Threads)

The Bears have a rubbish home ground on a cricket field and they’ll constantly undermine any deals with organisations/people in Perth until they get their standalone team, the north Sydney bears back in the NRL.

I wouldn’t trust them at all.

The PNG option is interesting. Footy aside, it’s an extremely affordable option for increasing Australia’s national security against Chinese influence to the north. Team management, performance and player management will have to be immaculately planned to ensure both the NRL and Australia’s national security are well served.

But the Aus gov won’t give the NRL £35m per year for ten years for that (but I do agree with your point on achieving the same goals).

What happens after 10 years?

who picks up the bill then?

I agree regarding the bears and their ultimate goal of doing to Perth want manly did to them 2 decades ago.

as for PNG they would be dependent on the governments of today in both Canberra and PNG and if I’ve learned anything about politics and politicians it’s that I wouldn’t trust them as far as I could throw them and that policies can change overnight.

Not just Geopolitical options. They have the biggest rugby league player base and fan base in the world. It’s incredibly deserved.

PNG is also an incredibly poor country whose population has very little disposable income.

Not necessarily, it can still be done without conferences. You could even just go to 24 in time, with Melbourne 2 and Central Coast as well, and have the same number of games as now

I can see the pros and cons of conferences but people do talk about them with 20 teams too.

I personally like the idea of conferences but I’d be lying if I knew how to organize them and on what basis you would put teams into the 2 different conferences.

Fan of PNG, not so on Perth Bears.

Believe the Bears will only get a few games in Sydney though which is better than half...

The bears would already get potentially 9 Sydney games when playing away games against the Sydney based teams .

Fantasy could very well become reality quite quickly. I'm aware of the challenges but the upside is huge. Arguably more potential players in PNG than any other country in the world.

Again PNG is a poor 3rd world country with all the problems that come with being such.

also the logistics of such a team would be a nightmare for the  players and coaching/backroom staff .

Most seem to revolve around some sort of NSW based conference and then the rest. I was open to them but then people pointed out the faults and I've been persuaded they aren't a good idea.

As the NRL have never even had a straightforward home and away schedule they just seem needless anyway.

Was that not the merger with Manly 20 years ago?

A couple of years ago, a team based at Gosford was mooted.

Yeah, Manly and norths merged to form the northern eagles and played on the central coast.

I always thought that the manly sea eagles should have relocated to the central coast but that won’t happen now what with all the redevelopment at Brookvale oval.

I wasn't referring to Manly.

I was referring to another franchise which would see Norths play out of Gosford. Maybe around the time when the Titans came in.

Was maybe one of the other bids that lost out to the titans.

Central coast stadium was originally built for the bears but bad weather delayed construction and then the NRL introduced the policy of rationalization of Sydney based clubs.

Norths had already been out a few years by then. Gosford is now built. Is this a non starter for the Bears now?

It should be the only strategy the Bears consider. Every other bid/partnership idea of theirs is a distraction from putting together a very strong bid in Gosford.

The Central coast should definitely be an expansion option for the NRL and the bears are the best and most obvious choice.

I suppose tax breaks to incentivise players to go there doesn't sound as exciting as 'danger money'.

I think the PNG option is definitely one the game should explore, its very rare that RL receives such significant government support and we should take advantage of these opportunities where they arise.

V’landys never said “Danger Money” that’s just a load of dribble from the article. All he said was players would make more in PNG because of lower tax rates.

I’m not sure why you think this idea is “ridiculous”. If rugby league want’s to grow, tapping into our biggest player and audience base in the world is probably a smart idea.

And I genuinely believe rugby league will do big things for the saftey of Port Moresby. It would bring a lot of tourism and money which would improve the city drastically.
