Carcassonne XIII v Villeneuve/Lot

Recommended Posts

Wasn’t sure what to expect yesterday at Stade Albert Domec, Visitors Villeneuve leaked half a century of points week before against Albi on the same pitch. The Tarn side are chasing USV possibly for the last two play-off spots with four games left to play after this one.

Against the competitions new leader expected the worst. After quarter of an hour thought wouldn’t be worth it as the Canaris helped them to two converted tries with ease. Rinaldi’s side didn’t look up for it physically Too many light weight players. Early on here and Magic Weekends no show reflect poorly on Elite 1 depth I thought.

Fortunately USV pulled themselves together inspired by halves Godinet and skipper Villegas, It took Carcassonne a good 40 minutes to find the whitewash again,12-12 at the break with the hosts next scores being three penalties. The leaders rapped it up late 30-16 with two further tries with USV claiming their third from lively wing Ugaia – a hat-trick. Other scores…

Lezignan 36-10 St Esteve

Avignon 22-16 Toulouse Broncos

St Gaudens 26-36 Limoux

Palau 36-42 Albi * in added time

Yes. They're much improved this year. Would take some time to reach St Esteve level (Dragons reserves). Latter falling off the pace a bit as players like Da Costa and Lucas Albert receive SL call-ups.

I would love to see Carcassonne in Super League. A beautiful city to visit and to watch Rugby League.

I hope Parky doesn't read my post 😀

True enough Gordon, the Broncos are maturing well.  Big Nicolas Faure who played with the first team when TO were previously in the Championship is back playing and adds steel and experience to the kids. Old hand Kane Bentley is still directing traffic as more and more of the kids get into the first team. Young Jussaume looks the real deal.

Albi scraping through in another high-scoring encounter with Carcassonne next up at the Mazicou this weekend.

Peter - I think Nicolas Faure played against Widnes in that CC game back in 2005 under Justin Morgan. His older brother Seb played at Carcassonne.

He did indeed Gordon, here are the teams :

Toulouse Spacers: Murphy; Lima, Couturier, Estebanez, Olieu; Mulhall, Wynne; Fauré, Gay, Gallagher, Delpoux, Raguin, Robinson. Subs: Viala, Vincent, Prizzon, Almuzara.

Widnes Vikings: Hulse; Manu, Connolly, Hughes, Emilio; Craigie, Myler; O'Connor, Millard, O'Neill, Cassidy, Whittaker, Frame. Subs: Mills, Smith, Johnson, Holmes.

He scored one of the tries in the 40 - 24 victory. Toulouse born Seb Raguin of course before his Catalan days and Damien Couturier, was he the kicker in that side ?

I could have sworn Jamal Fakir played in that game or is my mind playing tricks on me?!

Lima's son already played in the Championship for TOXIII. Estebanez went onto play union at the top level and was capped by France. Wonder what happened to that loose forward Robinson!?

What support does this French League get ?

The Carcassonne match report quoted 700. The Canaris derby match at Limoux few months back was around 2,000. As good as i've seen in years. The game here much changed with the Dragons and TO competing across the Channel. When Catalans entered SL in 2006 there were two Top 14 clubs in Narbonne and Perpignan in the region . Today the former are playing at 3rd tier level with crowds less than the three aude rugby league clubs get while USAP could be facing a second relegation from the top division inside five years.

What would you say is the biggest match in Elite 1? By that I mean the equivalent of Sts v Wigan for example rather than a specific competition.

Could we see increased fund allocation should USAP dive again A?

When I was in Narbonne last summer there seemed to be a healthy number of shirts on display around town including at Narbonne Plage.
