D-Day 80 . Listening to the veterans stories has been very emotional . The best of us , never to be forgotten

I've just attended the memorial service at the cenotaph in Hull. Very emotional. We will never forget those great men.

Apologies, but I am a day late with this.

Yesterday was the 162nd anniversary of the Blaydon races, as described by the contemporary song-writer, George Ridley

Aa went to Blaydon Races, 'twas on the ninth of Joon,
Eiteen hundred an' sixty-two, on a summer's efternoon;
Aa tyuk the 'bus frae Balmbra's, an' she wis heavy laden,
Away we went 'lang Collin'wood Street, that's on the road to Blaydon.

Silly or Very Silly Party?

Wait 'til you find out that the first "Tollemache-Tollemache" is pronounced differently to the second "Tollemache-Tollemache".

On this day in 1816, Lord Byron issued a challenge to his fellow holiday-makers, John Polidori, Percy Shelley and Mary Shelley. to write a macabre story each.

First day Battle of the Somme … the British suffered 57,000 casualties a record for the British Army. Naturally we did it again the next day , and next  . Five months later for a gain of 6 miles we’d suffered 420,000 casualties and the Battle a million in total

45 years to the day that Sapphire & Steel first hit our screens and messed up a lot of young minds.

"All irregularities will be handled by the forces controlling each dimension. Transuranic heavy elements may not be used where there is life. Medium atomic weights are available: Gold, Lead, Copper, Jet, Diamond, Radium, Sapphire, Silver and Steel. Sapphire and Steel have been assigned."

On this day in 1858, the first ever Australian Rules Football game was played between Melbourne Grammar and Scotch College.

Please don't tell me the score as I'm watching it later on catch-up.

I'm gonna try to post more things local to my area on this thread.

On this day in 1316, King Edward II granted the right to run a ferry between Hull and Barton on Humber; charges were 1/2d per person, 1d for a horse and rider, 2d for a cart and 2 horses.

On this day in 1643, the Royalist army occupied Beverley after the Parliamentarian army fell back to Hull, looted and plundered the town, and nearby villages, even though residents were Royalist supporters.

42 years ago today I married the girl who is now Mrs Moose. We had very little money so our honeymoon was a week in Scarborough, unbeknown to my wife the B&B in Trafalgar Square over looked the fabulous cricket ground and fortunately it was the Scarborough Cricket Festival week.

She’s dislikes cricket to this day.
