The Masked Poster
3 hours ago, Man of Kent said: Yeah but crowds blah yadda blah Still 17 games to go too, including 6 semis and 3 finals (with minimum 5, possibly 8 games involving English sides). Good stuff. Yeah crowds. Those things that fill stadiums and enhance the experience for both attendees and TV viewers. The thing that the tournament has been sorely lacking. You are talking nonsense, the first thing that would strike a casual viewer of an important RLWC game was if the stadium was 2/3 empty. But yeah, you know best. How do you think I got hooked on rugby league? If you weren't our games would be packed out nationwide. You're making the mistake of assuming because you like something, everyone else will act similar. I like plenty of minority interest stuff but that's me, not the masses. People may enjoy watching a RL game in an empty stadium but their overriding image will be of a game that's not very popular. It also makes it harder to sell to commercial partners too - perception can be everything. Edited November 8, 2022 by The Masked Poster

Don’t get too hung up about the crowds, they are of secondary import.

Don’t get too hung up about the crowds, they are of secondary import. We get millions of viewers every year on the BBC, we got millions of viewers in 2013 (13.3m in the UK). Getting £ value from it is proving a slow burner, which is fine, and we just have to go on that journey, but it is not going to instantly replace the millions of quid that we need to get from crowds, sponsors, grants etc. These things all need to be good. But these numbers are excellent and do show how important terrestrial tv coverage is, particularly the BBC. They have been a great partner.

It is great coverage yes but if a large percentage of those people watching are going to be given the impression that it's an unpopular sport that can't even attract big crowds in it's heartlands, then it's a negative. If people didn't notice crowds they wouldn't take the pee out of Man City and call it the Emptyhad. On a basic level, the 18.7 million who have watched the games hitherto on TV dwarfs the attendance figure. It’s not 1895. TV > attendances.

Yet the 2022 crowds will have a bigger average than the 2017 tournament in Oz by the close of play so they are on an upwards trajectory.

Bedford Roughyed
Viewers eh.... 9 With the best, thats a good bit of PR, though I would say the Bedford team, theres, like, you know, 13 blokes who can get together at the weekend to have a game together, which doesnt point to expansion of the game. Point, yeah go on!

Let's just play them on a field somewhere. They can still be televised because a crowd doesn't matter. This isn't "either/or". Fantastic FTA coverage is great but it should be complimented by loud, lively crowds feeding a great atmosphere. Pretty sure that if 23000 turned up to the Nou Camp one night, Barca would be asking questions regardless of their wealth. And people would notice. Dave T
Looking at the videos posted on Twitter by RLWC it's interesting to see that the viral videos of the last 10 days are not the big hits, or the tries, or the fancy plays from the big mens games. 1.4m for Samoa v Tonga pre-match 176k wheelchair action 141k wheelchair clip 110k for Fiji hymn 60k Fiji Hymn 40k Spain v Ireland wheelchair 32k England women 26k Princess of Wales 25k NZ women haka 25k Wheelchair rugby league clip 18k PNG try v Wales

It was 32,000 in the Nou Camp by the way - not bad for a French and English team playing in a neutral venue in a different county.
