Cooper Cronk. A Class Act.

Recommended Posts

I’m catching up on the post game analysis of the Storm v Roosters match and having heard Corey Parker tear shreds off the referee, Cooper keeps calm and simply says, he got it wrong, he made a mistake but going on about it won’t change anything, he’ll come under pressure during the week from his bosses.

Now the error from Kline was an absolute shocker, but everyone knows it was a shocker. Cooper did a great job of nipping the conversation in the bud so the conversation about the rest of the game could continue.

He’s easily my favourite pundit. Corey Parker can learn a thing or two from him.

Watching the presser, Trent Robinson has also shown a high level of class, deflecting media attempts to lure him into a few more comments on the decision and the referee.

Instead he focused the discussion on the Roosters and what his team did and didn’t do to win the game.

Both Cronk and Robinson were excellent.

Robinson in particular has seen his side's season end and that included a try in the set after a bit of a clanger from the ref which should have seen the Roosters on the attack.

His response, yes it was a mistake but we should have defended better as well.

He is a credit to the sport.

Yes Corey Parker was wittering on about that for far too long, it was ridiculous. Refs make mistakes.

The media is responsible for a lot of the noise around it, stoking the flames. It flows down the to lower levels of the game and causes no end of problems. Parker should know better.

Apparently this site says I "won the day" here on 23rd Jan, 19th Jan, 9th Jan also 13th December, whatever any of that means. Anyway, 4 times in a few weeks? The forum must be going to the dogs - you people need to seriously up your game. Where's Dutoni when you need him?

While I was watching the game live one thing did cross my mind.

After the Storm scored, the commentary team did make reference to the call from the ref but if that had been Super League, before the replay of the try there would have been a replay of that incident and the ref's call... as the production for as long as I can remember has been about finding the error that led to the try... whether that be the opposition or ref.

Starting with Eddie and Stevo, Sky have tried to find controversy to raise the drama in almost every game.  These things play through to the psychology of the whole game over time.

No good to paper over blunders like that. With the minute-attention that every movement and utterance gets in the drama-filled Aussie media landscape, it is only right that some people will choose to ''blow up deluxe'' - to paraphrase one of the terms I have heard on some of the more red-top outlets.

I would be focusing on practical ways of improving things, like going back down the field on the say of the Bunker and re-setting the clock - and getting Mr. Klein an urgent appointment at one of Sydney's most respected opticians.

I think the problem is that sometimes there ain't that much to say about it. They acknowledged it was an error, but there ain't too much more that can be analysed over and above that.

A little like if somebody throws an intercept pass to lose a game, it will be discussed and highlighted, but there ain't too much more to discuss.

An error is an error - it's probably only right to be discussed as controversial if there is a system/process failing. But seeing something (or not) and coming up with an error is just life.

No problem with the call. Happens with catches in cricket where it's unclear whether the ball hit the ground first. Easy to see in slow motion. Not so easy at full speed. Any doubt - play on.

Refs can call half a dozen phantom knock-ons and they all get instantly forgotten. Or overturned by captain's challenge. They miss an actual knock-on and it's headline news.
