Yellow/red Cards

Recommended Posts

One for the older followers or ex officials to confirm or deny here… Iv been trying to dig out the old laws on sin bins with no joy, in the back of my mind in the 1980’s was a yellow card a 5 minute sin bin and a red 10 mins?

The reason I’m asking is there’s been a discussion on an incident in the 1983 Lancs cup final between Barrow v Widnes,  Szymala & Tamati got a red for fighting but only did 10mins in the bin, could it have been a ref error or back then was a red 10 mins but a full send off was just a point from the ref towards the direction of the change rooms?

No definitely red was sent off for rest of match, I was playing before and until 99.

Just watching the video the ref shows the red card but Ray French says  10 minuets in the sin bin. Later in the game the two players are back on the pitch.

Yeah this is why the question was originally asked, no one can remember what the cards were for back then! 😂

According to the history section of the Cornwall website,

In 1983, the sin bin is introduced for on-field offences in the UK. Referees now have the power to yellow card an offending player, leaving them to serve a ten-minute suspension. In the same year, the number of points awarded for scoring a try increased from three to four.

There was definitely a five minute option for a season or two.

I've checked in Moorhouse "The History of Rugby League" but could not find any references to this. I've just checked my only Rothmans's (1990)  and again can find no reference in the Memories section.

I did find this, though in the 1989 -1990 Headlines  paragraphs

"A campaign to clamp down on illegal head tackles resulted in total dismissals for all offences shooting up to 172, almost doubled the previous seasons total of 91 and the highest figure for many years....there was certainly cause for great concern that 34 sent off players were later found not guilty."

Plus ça change etc....

Those 34 must have been Wigan players.
