The Vet
One for the older followers or ex officials to confirm or deny here… Iv been trying to dig out the old laws on sin bins with no joy, in the back of my mind in the 1980’s was a yellow card a 5 minute sin bin and a red 10 mins? johnh1
Red has always been off for good in my memory.
ELBOWSEYE
Yellow was 5 for a spell and two yellows for a player means he was sent off.
Liverpool Rover
From my hazy memory players could be sin binned for 5 or 10 minutes. Red cards were still to send players off.
The Vet
The reason I’m asking is there’s been a discussion on an incident in the 1983 Lancs cup final between Barrow v Widnes, Szymala & Tamati got a red for fighting but only did 10mins in the bin, could it have been a ref error or back then was a red 10 mins but a full send off was just a point from the ref towards the direction of the change rooms? No definitely red was sent off for rest of match, I was playing before and until 99.

Cherry and White
Just watching the video the ref shows the red card but Ray French says 10 minuets in the sin bin. Later in the game the two players are back on the pitch. HOLD ON TIGHT TO YOUR DREAM. liverpool fc-rome 1977 wigan rl-wembley 1985 redsox-2004 GB RL-????? JohnM
According to the history section of the Cornwall website, In 1983, the sin bin is introduced for on-field offences in the UK. Referees now have the power to yellow card an offending player, leaving them to serve a ten-minute suspension. In the same year, the number of points awarded for scoring a try increased from three to four. https://cornwallrlfc.co.uk/club/history-of-the-rfl-and-rl/ Edited September 9 by JohnM

JohnM
The problem is, that those of us old enough to remember, are now too old to remember. Edited September 10 by JohnM 1
JohnM
I've checked in Moorhouse "The History of Rugby League" but could not find any references to this. I've just checked my only Rothmans's (1990) and again can find no reference in the Memories section. I did find this, though in the 1989 -1990 Headlines paragraphs "A campaign to clamp down on illegal head tackles resulted in total dismissals for all offences shooting up to 172, almost doubled the previous seasons total of 91 and the highest figure for many years....there was certainly cause for great concern that 34 sent off players were later found not guilty." Plus ça change etc....

JohnM
Of course. Including the 20 we're allowed on the pitch at any one time.
