gingerjon
i'm actually in favour of a limited entry for some of these Calais migrants based on their ability to sustian themselves and contribute to our society. How you would pick the right people given that the overwhelming majority have no papers and have broken the law repeatedly just to be within sight of the striking French workers who keep setting fire to the motorway? How will we cope? Once you set the precedent of opening the doors it wont stop at 5000, it will very quickly become 10,000, then 20,000 and so on.... It wont be long before nearly every migrant already in the EU will be heading to the UK, no doubt actively encouraged by other EU governments keen to get them out of their countries. It would then just encourage even more to make the perilous trip from their own countries safe in the knowledge they will have a home in the UK when they get there. JohnM
Tell us, oh wise ones, why these unfortunates choose to travel say from Syria, across Turkey, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Germany and France, or Italy and France, all the way to Calais, just to enter the UK? It must be one hell of a place to live! Calais mayor Natacha Bouchart claims the UK caused the crisis by providing cushy benefits and not controlling the economy. She said the UK should be forced to abandon border checks for travellers arriving from Europe to help move the migrants away.Ms Bouchart said: "They want to go to ENGLAND because they can expect better conditions on arrival there than anywhere else in Europe or even internationally" http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/illegal-immigrant-crisis-french-police-5810705. How will we cope? It will be many, many times that number if we adopt an open border policy. Anyone that gets in needs to be deported if an illegal immigrant and granted a chance to claim for asylum if they choose to do so, but the fact they chose not to claim in France should be a black mark on their application, unless they can justify why they didn't. What we can't do is just grant automatic right of immigration to every gang of young Muslim men that turns up threatening border staff at Calais. It should be obvious why not

That's a refreshingly honest way to sign off a post. I can confirm 30+ less sales for Scotland vs Italy at Workington, after this afternoons test purchase for the Tonga match, £7.50 is extremely reasonable, however a £2.50 'delivery' fee for a walk in purchase is beyond taking the mickey, good luck with that, it's cheaper on the telly. It should be obvious why not We dont know the exact religious make-up of the people in the camps in Calais, but it does appear that a large number of them are from muslim countries. You have to wonder then why they are so desperate to get out of France and into the UK given that France has significant muslim communities across the country with a network of ready made support groups for new arrivals. They could be free from persecution in any EU country, so thats not a reason for being so desperate to get into the UK. If they wanted to settle somewhere that already has large populations of people with similar beliefs - well thats not the UK either, France would be the logical choice. You would have to conclude then that the only logical reason for many of these people to want to get into the UK is for pure financial gain. This makes them economic migrants and isn't a valid reason to grant them asylum. St.Helens - The Home of record breaking Rugby Champions

Griff9of13
Far from the hysteria whipped up by sections of the tabloid press, it would seem the UK is far from the number one European destination for asylum seekers: From Full Fact Twice as many prefer France and ten times as many Germany. JohnM
Glad you cited the trusted source Full Fact, which also says this: Researchers at LSE built on a previous estimate for the Home Office to look into the number of what it called “irregular migrants”—migrants who have either entered illegally or who do not have permission to remain in the UK. It estimated that at the end of 2007 there were between 373,000 and 719,000 living in the UK. https://fullfact.org/immigration/how_man_illegal_immigrants_uk-32868 Seems we are quite popular after all!
