Cameron: hypocrite or opportunist?

Recommended Posts

I don't blame her. A government proposal can be against your principles but, once implemented, becomes a fait accompli. Thousands of people opposed Thatcher's selling off of the electricity and gas generation boards. However, once the shares were on sale, it was a no-brainer to buy some. I bet you bought some, John.

Lisa Cameron and her husband have acquired those properties on the open market, competing against other property-developers. I suspect that she and her husband are  at least as caring landlords as is Prince Charles' Duchy of Cornwall estate.

Incidentally, have you ever seen the state of some of those former council/housing association properties when they come on to the market? I've seen some absolute pigsties.

Seven whole properties in her portfolio.  Five of which are ex-council houses.  All five of which were previously in private hands and bought fairly, three of them were bought by auction.  Most of them, can't find out the exact figure, were council houses last in the 80s and 90s.

Is she supposed to veto buying ex-council houses, leaving them to go to other landlords who aren't politicians?

I'm really not sure what she's supposedly done wrong apart from it being a faux-outrage thing.

Also, in the modern property market, can a £630,000 portfolio really be called an "empire"?  Finally, all of them are on the market for under £400 per month getting under £2000 per month in total before costs are deducted.  Not exactly what you'd call a lucrative money-spinner going by the things we see on MPs' registers of interest.

If she declares them in members interests then she's not broken any rules.

By the looks of it she hasn't bought any directly off the council or housing association, they were just properties on the open market that happened to be, possibly quite some time ago, council built and owned.

The key to the story may be this:

"Dr Cameron's husband, who was declared bankrupt less than three years ago, is responsible for the day-to-day running of the flourishing business"

Looks to me like it could be her husband's source of income, bought in her name due to his bankruptcy.

anyway, if you're looking for a story about Cameron and housing why not try this, again from the Mail: I fear my children won’t get on housing ladder (perhaps you can help out, Dave - with your £30m family fortune!) :O

Living in the south east I am genuinely shocked that you can get that many properties for £630,000

Has she done anything wrong legally - No, morally - probably not in most people's eyes. The problem here is that what she's doing privately is totally at odds with what she's saying politically so you have to wonder if everything else she allegedly stands for is just an act. Political principals obviously come below profit.

Has she gone against her principals? She's against the sale of council houses. Has she bought houses from the council or housing associations? No, she has bought houses that were sold by private individuals.

Yes, i'd say she's gone against her pripcipals:

at a General Election hustings in April, 43-year-old Dr Cameron vowed to 'oppose the sale of housing association homes', arguing: 'We need to make sure we have affordable homes for people within our communities. We would end austerity to the most vulnerable people and support them in finding homes.'

So her idea of having affordable homes is to rent all hers out at top market value way above what socal housing rents are. What she's doing is just further reducing the number of available affordable housing in the area.

The photos in that article are a reminder, if we needed one, of the sheer brutal ugliness of much of the municipal housing in Scotland. Municipal socialism certainly didn't seem to result in attractive living environments for many working class people.
