One of my mum's favourite sayings, from Thomas Gray. He was apparently inspired by Biblical scripture. Eccl 1:18 “For with much wisdom comes much sorrow; the more knowledge, the more grief”.

The meaning is when one pursues wisdom and knowledge, the realisation of how short our lives are to use it leads to frustration. 

Another angle is a woman was just telling me how her husband reads the newspaper thoroughly and gets wound up about it all. I recalled this saying and suggested that he gives up reading it. That’s what I did with the news. I just keep an eye on the headlines.
